History on 800notes of debt scamming.
___________________
Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a dime until the debt is validated
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.
If they are bothering you, report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.) The same goes for endless telephone harassment
Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question. As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes. The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question. Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else. So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you. Let the FTC sort it out.
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.
You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.
You have to get tuff with these people because, being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking). the only thing they understand.- Caller: Informational post
- honchofirst off they will file a debt in a real court ,you will get this info in the mail or certified mail. this will show up on a credit report. If you don't pay they will come after you with a lean, or attack you wages. this is a scam, you will know when it is a real and legal debt collection.

- VictoriaGot this call today said I owe 1300 for a Citi card from 2001 but if I made payments 2 I could send 831 if they serve me it will double to 2500 they said where I work and would I be home on the 14 for the papers WTH

- Victoria replies to Monica| 1 replyYes he called today Mr Kellerman I said I would send money order he said no it had to be a debit or credit card Are these people fake or real WTF
- Tygerkat replies to VictoriaIf you had read the other posts in this thread you would know it's a scam. Do not give them any money. Real process servers don't call in advance and they don't give you the option to pay your way out of being served. If this joker calls again and you speak to him (I recommend against it) demand he obey the law by mailing you proof of the debt. Refusal on his part guarantees he's a scammer.
- BONITA replies to Fernando| 1 replyThey are not ligit! They call from different phone numbers and bought a website that was no longer being used. They do not answer the phone a professional business should. They tried the same tactics as the others have posted on here. I hope they didn't get your bank account information!
- BONITA replies to EffScammers| 2 repliesI spoke with one of them. wanted me to pay a verizon phone bill from a number I had back from the 90's. They had the last 4 digits of my social and I confirmed. Now I'm frightened they will use it this to in identity theft!
- PaulGot the same thing under madien name and have been married 15 years and the man was yelling at me to pay my bills didn't make sense

- Resident47 replies to BONITA| 1 replyJunk debt portfolios routinely carry personal information, including SSN. Junk debt collectors routinely use these data as part of "objection handling" to convince you that whatever posed threat is real. What they lack is proof you owe, hence the stupid threats. Plain old ID theft from JSA agents is not impossible but less likely. They are already running a fraud which works; usually only a civil penalty would be imposed if they're busted. They would run a greater risk of criminal prosecution for ranging beyond dubious debt collection.
- Steve sheinkopf replies to Resident47Just received one...the number is from Senegal
- Resident47 replies to BONITA} I hope they didn't get your bank account information!
He'll be fine. "Fernando" struggles to keep an average daily balance of $2.61 in his bank account due to thin income and a fat drug habit, two conditions which his employers at JSA are not improving. - dI just got a call from 866-723-6224 in my VM- Thanks for giving me the heads up before I call them back which I am NOT going to do.. The number came across as "314" and the lady gave me the 866 number on my VM stating they had "Legal Docs" too
- Caller: J Smith
- sjs| 2 repliesHow many times did they call and leave vm's before leaving any of you alone. They have now left me 4 voicemails all from a different person but saying the exact same thing. It's very obvious they are reading from a script.
