- dlee replies to AMEX customerFrom amex fraud dept, will display charge by text msg with a link to your amex account to confirm you charges.
- Nice tryThis is a scam. Any doubts about your account - deal only with American Express at the Customer Support number on your card. No need to dial the "fraud" unit.
- Dennis t| 1 replyThere are a lot of stuoid people putting info in this biard. THIS IS a valid number from AMEX fraud service. I used my card in an unusual way and i received three calls from this number wanting to verify that i made the purchases. I have no idea why some people are making statements about this being a scam. I am delighted they called me.

- DM1 replies to Dennis tstuoid? biard? Can you say scam?
- syn ackI got a fraudulent call where this number was obviously spoofed. An automated system was telling me about a security problem with my amex card. I hung up and called the number on the back of the card and there was no problem. Be careful. (I actually already knew that there was no problem, because I signed up for fraud alerts via e-mail and text already and did not get any notices).
- AlanaAfter receiving an automated message from 1-800-824-9289, my spouse called AMEX. This IS their legitimate "fraud alert" number.
- Caller: American Express
- BandiThe phone number they left on our voice mail was legit, but to be safe I didn't call that, I called the one listed on the back of my Amex card. Didn't give out my full cc number when the automated thing answered but did talk to a representative. And YES there was a fraudulent charge placed on my husband's card about 20 minutes prior for $$$ at a gas/convenience store in a different state (VA) than which we live in. Amex had already blocked it, but was calling to inquire about it. They are now sending out a new card for my husband. Interesting note here: My husband only uses his card *in person*, not online.

Call type: Fraud prevention (no accurate selections listed in pull down menu)
I attempted an online purchase from a Canadian company that failed to process on my AmEx card. No more than 1 or 2 minutes later my phone started ringing. A robo dialer left a message on my voicemail identifying itself as being from AmEx and asked me to return the call. I called the number on the back of my card and they confirmed that the call was from the fraud prevention department. After clearing everything up I was able to successfully make the purchase that triggered the call.- Caller: American Express
- Uncle BrucieSame caller left a mssg at my office phone - referring to an AMEX acct ending in xxxxxxx - not my acct.
When I called AMEX they said it was a probable fraudster.- Caller: BOGUS AMEX
- Call type: Prank
- BrianThis number is LEGIT from Amex fraud prevention team. Someone tried to charge my card for something in Japan.
- Caller: Amex Express
- someone replies to Almost ScammedYou didn't hanged up...you hung up!
- Liz replies to DThat phone number 800-824-9289 is for AmEX - I am a merchant that deals with Amex daily, and this is a number for AmEx to validate that a customer did place and authorize a charge. They are legit and professional. You will see if you call that number.
- Liz replies to j-zedThat is a valid amex phone number. We are a merchant and speak to AmEx on a daily basis.
- BrianThis number left a VM telling me to call back the number or the number at the back of my American Express card to verify recent account activity. I called the number on my card and American Express was able to verify that this number, 800-824-9289 IS a valid number from their security department.
- Caller: American Express
- Annoyed In Cali replies to Mary| 3 repliesInteresting as I do not, nor have I ever had an AMEX account. Furthermore, if this was legit, why would caller refrain from leaving a message? Sounds fraudulent to me!
- Barkdust800-824-89289 is a legitimate American Express fraud number. They just called me with a questionable transaction which was also shown on their website. Those of you who think that it is a fraud are simply wrong.
There should be a category "legitimate" in the call type. The only thing I can check is "unkown."- Caller: American Express
- EverI'm a child (14 years old) and this number called my phone that I've had for less than a year... Before this i didn't even know what American Express was, so I doubt I have an account...
- MonicaBecause this call sounded so suspicious, I called the number on the back of my Am Ex card and spoke to a Representative who verified that this is not a legitimate Am Ex number. These people who are making claims on this site that it is are all in on the scam.
- independent fraud investigatorLegit number, BUT... it takes .99 a month and 1/c/ per minute to get a voip phone account and set the number to anything you want it to be. They can call from a legit number, and as some have stated, it's a fraud, and it's real. Take down the information they give you, don't say 'yes' to anything, don't give them CCn, last 4, ccv number, ssn, birthdate, nothing. Don't 'verify' who they are talking to (they called you, right?) at the end of the call, take that information and call the number on the back of your card.
In my case, it was legit and I called # on back of the card. Again, the number itself doesn't tell you if this is a legit call or not.- Caller: American Express.
