If you do have a Capital One credit card and look on the back the number 1-800-955-7070 is 24 hour customer service.  That is why, if you call they are asking for you 16 digit card number, so I don't think this is a scam.

same as lsk, Capital One called to offer overage coverage for FREE so I could go over my limit!  Of course once you're over the limit you'll still have to pay their outrages fees, they will only go into details if you ask about them.

    Credit Cards = theives

I called 800-955-7070 and made up 16 numbers, got a customer service person who transferred me to the opt out number. They processed my opt out to not receive their telemarketing calls on my cell phone. Let's see if they stop.

This number called me and a woman first asked me for my SSN, I then asked her why. She told me the government has just passed a bill and I need to make a choice regarding my account, and she then asked me to verify my zip code. I never gave her any info to begin with! So first she asks for my SSN, then almost immediately asks for my ZIP. WTF! Scam!

Don't give out private info replies to Jules
Answered this call finally this morning.  Her name was Lauren.  They were going to tell me about important changes with the new laws that will be going in place.  She was trying to get my personal information such as zip code, phone number, etc... to verify who I was.  I told her that I was not comfortable giving any of that information over the phone as they already had it on file.  She said she needed it to verify who she was talking to.  I told her to tell me where my last purchase was made, what date my last payment was, and how much I had on my balance as is, and if she knew that I would verify my information.  She said it wasn't possible.  I told her to stop calling.  Waiting for more phone calls after this.

These people call at the strangest times.  I got a call at nearly 9:00pm.  far too late for an unwanted and unsolicited sales call.  I am reporting and listing them on the  national "NO CALL" list.  I suggest you all do the same.

This number IS from Capital One.  Go to capitalone.com (their official website), and find click the customer service contact us links.  It will show this phone number.  I am a Capital One member, and I use their website to make my payments and check my statement, so I know it is legit.  They have to contact you to tell you about the changes in legislation that is going to affect your credit terms, and it is supposed to take effect in February, so that is why everyone is getting calls now.  Uncle Sam is requiring them to do so.  But don't get too excited - it ain't gonna be good!

    Weird call
Phone rang just before 8 PM. Saturday night, 2 Jan 2010. Ignored the call. Checked the number through reverse look-up on the Internet. Number registered to Capital One. No msg. was left. Checked my online account -- everything looks okay. Not sure what the issue is, if there is an issue. Heck, maybe they're calling to inform me that I've won the lottery... wouldn't that be novel?

I have a really hard time thinking this is legit. I did receive a card recently, but already activated it days ago, and used afterward, so it's valid.

They called me well after 10pm on a Saturday. There is no overdue bill or open business with them. I smell a SCAM.

It is nice to have them when u need them but it is also nice to get someone whom speaks English. Everytime I have dealt with Capital One over a phone it was with someone whose English was less than perfect (meaning a foreigner).

The problem isn't in there notifying you about Uncle Sam attempting to dig deeper into our life byt the fact that they then try to sell you a credit protection policy. This is BS and after more than 8 years with Cap1 I'm rethinking the relationship.

hey idiot (whom prolly works for the scamming company), they are required to contact you by mail not by phone.  This is a scam if you have to give out information.

When the bank calls me they give me a call back # and reason for call.
I call back on their main line and get transferred to the right dept. I usually tell them to send me information via mail and they always do if its important.

they called many times. they made you angry purposely. then when u ask for supervisor, they always say that they need ur 16 digit credit card number before u can talk to a supervisor. once an old lady came on the line "oh, if we call u more than once, you must have another card with us, can I have that number?", "it's only courtesy call...". i believe that the caller id 800-955-7070 is faking!! why government don't do anything on this?

Have gotten a call a day for at least 3 days now from this number.  I figured if it was a legit call someone should have left a message by now.
