<p>It's <b>Capital One</b>, but I always just hang up on them.  Unfortunately they called at least 4 times yesterday, very close to 9:00 PM when they can't.  Their interest put my account over by a measly 90 cents and they charged me $39 for it.  That's how they make their money.  Tell me we don't need a Consumer Protection agency?</p>

<p>I had 3 Capital One cards and they tried to jack up the rates on all of them.  I canceled 2 and retained my under 10 percent interest.  Unfortunately I have to carry one credit card so I get to pay 29.99 percent for never missing a payment.   What is really sad is if I went bankrupt, scumbag creditors would be sending me pre-approved cards <b>AT THE SAME RATE</b>  No wonder so many people are going bankrupt, it really won't affect their credit much at all and can get their credit rating back to a good status in 2 years, not 7-10.</p>

the service doen't cost you anything monthly or yearly. the only time you pay is if you go over your credit limit. if you don't breach the card limit - you'll never see a charge. the service is by default on your account for emergencies and as long as you dn't go over the limit it doen't cost anything to have it!

what makes you think that when is mail is more legit than a phone call. anyone can send you mail and fabricate a letterhead to look like your bank sent it! i don't think you know the return address by heart when you're mailing the forms back, right. and also anybody can get your ZIP code from whitepages.com or just from a phonebook in any phonebooth. and yes this phone is LEGIT and this is really Cap1 calling to give you information and not to ask your details - they already know everything if you are their customer

some people are just dumb idiots. why don't you people that have capital one accounts do not look at the back of the credit card and you'll see that number there. THIS IS THE CAPITAL ONE CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER. i see a lot of comments here of some paranoid people that are so wrong. before you make another wrng accusation, check the number (not on google) but actually look at the company's website or look at the back of the card. SAME NUMBER, ISN'T IT?

Called again today at 3:30pm EST.

Called back this time. Basically only went through to tell me what my balance was and blah blah blah didn't mention anything about an automated message.

    Maybe tomorrow.

I actually work for Capitol One and every thing you stated is our mandatory process.  We are required to verify the primary account member by postal zip code, zip is common because we understand that customers don't want to disclose personal info.  If the customer cannot verify, because this will be the original zip code on the account and you can have multiple addresses (such as previous homes) on the online account.  I just wish customers would understand that the telephone agents, like myself, are required to READ SCRIPTING! Everything done on a call is ditated by Capital One LAWYERS...it truly is for protection and you always have a choice... I'm just appreciating the flexible scheduling as I'm a college student... I appreciate you're courtesy but people have to understand that this stuff has to be uniform...

I received a call from 800-955-7070 and the caller was very hard to hear. He used my name in conjunction with a Capital One account and wanted to talk to me about the latest changes with credit cards and how this would affect me. I asked him to wait a minute while I began to record the conversation for posterity and the caller hung up. I contacted Capitol One immediately and went to the fraud department. I explained why I was calling and was put in contact with customer service who stated there was no reason to have anyone calling me.
I suspect this is a phishing expedition by unscrupulous people who are trying to find information on your identity and credit card information.
my suggestion is to keep a recording system close to your phone and either turn it on or let the other side know that you will be recording the conversation. Chances are they will hang up and hopefully go away.
Always take the time to report this to a real representative of the company so they can begin or add to their knowledge of these idiots.

This is not to be trusted.

I got this phone call repeatedly and did not answer and they called at very strange times: 6am, Noon, 9pm, and 10pm.

When I finally answered they gave me a nice long "convincing" line about reminding about legislation blah blah blah. Then he magically couldn't find my zip code in his system - despite the fact that I regularly get mail from them for my account. Then he magically couldn't find my phone number...which he used to call me.

So the only option was, and I quote, "I know this sounds strange sir, but can I verify your social security number". And I'm sorry, the buck stops there. This is a scam. If you give them information, you're an idiot.

Finally! was able to take this call. They asked for my zip code and to verify my card ended in the right digits. They explained to me about the new legislation about going over the credit limit (which I do not, at all.) and asked if i wanted to keep the account as-is. I said that I really don't go over my limit and use the card only in emergency so I wasn't bothered about not being opted-in.

I'll keep an eye out on my account to see if anything 'phishy' goes on.

You ppl are so hilarious.  Okay...Capital One is known as a budget credit card company.  They will give credit to *anyone*.  It is clear from reading all the messages here what kind of crazy clientele they have.  Here's an idea: how bout u ppl grow up and get some good credit so you can have a real credit card: ie American Express?????  Then you will actually receive good customer service and you won't have your phone number sold for cash to the highest bidder in a dark scummy alleyway!!! lolz

They call I answer and there no one seems to be on the other end of the line.  it may be a scam, not sure.  This is what I did today.

File A Complaint with the National Do Not Call Registry.
    www.donotcall.gov
Your registration will not expire. Telephone numbers placed on the National Do Not Call Registry will remain on it permanently due to the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007, which became law in February 2008. Read more about it at www.ftc.gov
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY
The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home or cell phone. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at this Website. You can register your home or mobile phone for free.

Stop Harassment and do not call list BS!
Okay here it is: Send a certified Mail, return receipt requested to Capital One,/Attn: 63001-0125, at 15000 Capital One Drive, Richmond, Virgenia 23238.
Now. They have to stop calling you no matter if you have an account with them or not. They will be violating the Fair Credit Report Rules and you can go after them in FEDERAL COURT under "Violating of your civil rights". The judge will ask you to confer with their attorney probably about twice and then the judge will get mad and tell you to work out an agreement. Be sure to include any and all fees you incured, (Do not use and Attorney), Do it yourself. Go to www.ruleoflawradio.com and find Mr. Merris I think and he tells you how to do it and include a request for additional monies for your inconvience, postage, and pain and suffering. I think you will be suprised--THIS WORKS!

I received a call from this number 2 days in a row at the same time.  Decided to answer on the second day spoke with John from Capital One.  He was indeed from Capital One, and asked to verify that my account ended in the last 4 digits that my Capital One account ended with.  Asked for my zip code to verify that I was the card holder.  After questioning why he told me he wanted to go over a change in legislation starting on Feb. 1 that will not let you make purchases over the credit limit on your card, now if your purchase takes you over the credit limit you will be declined instead of the purchase going through and charged a fee.  I told him that sounded great, then he proceeded to try and get me to sign up to allow Capital One to continue allowing me to make purchases over the credit limit, which I don't do and have no interest in doing, for a reduced fee.  They try to sell you on this for "emergency purchases," why would I want a Credit Card company to allow me to spend over the limit just so they can charge me a fee?  Defeats the purchase of the legislation if you ask me.  Don't waste your time they really try hard to push you to sign up at no cost until you go over your limit.

If this was legit, then the recording on the other end when you call the number back (because they always hang up when you answer) would give you the option to speak to a person BEFORE entering your account number!  You can get no where calling them without entering your card number!

There is no way in hell this is legit!
