- EdI also received a call from 800-955-7070. They stated they were calling from Capital One. However, before they could proceed they needed to confirm if they were speaking with the card holder and asked that I give them my zip code. I told them that I would call them back later. She stated, "no, you can't, only we can call you. When would it be a good time to call back." It was strange. I did not trust them. They have called 4 times today. I have not answered and decided to google it. Beware

- lowriderlee replies to Greg Koly| 2 repliesMy caller ID shows I'm getting a call from these folks EVERY SINGLE DAY for the last few weeks. A message is never left. I do have an account with Capital One, and I just received an email stating a new card was mailed out recently. I guess I better go online to find out what's going on with my account.
- gmcbikerCalled 10-08-09. I don't have a Capitol One credit card nor do I want one! Don't have any credit cards don't want any! I have blocked this number but they still keep calling! I am on the Do Not Call List, but I get these calls! Hey AG what gives?
- Caller: Capitol One
- RobinWe received numerous calls from this number for the last year or so. Sometimes multiple times a week, sometimes not at all. No message was ever left.
These past two weeks, we have received a call from this number every single day but no message is ever left.
WTF?! - citizen replies to ChristinaThey call me several times a day. Total Harassment. I finally answered and it was a young girl. She asked me to verify my zipcode, said she was from CapOne. I asked her to send me a letter in the mail instead. She said that wasn't possible. I asked her for her personal info so I could verify independently with CapOne that the inquiry was legit. She put me on hold. I hung up. Sounds like a spoofing scam to me.

- SJThis is a scam. They left a message on my home phone. CapOne has my cell number. Being suspicious, I called the number on the back of the card, rather than the 800-955-7070 number left in the message. Wasn't about to type in my cc # on an unknown. CapOne rep. said they had not contacted me.
- AndrewfromCaliThey called. I, like others, googled the number instead of answering. But instead of ignoring it. I decided to call back. I entered 16 zeros for my credit car number. There was then a few options. I decided I would like to know the details of my fake credit card. They then asked for my SSN. So I put 9 zeros for my SSN. A man was then on the phone. He spoke some rather jittery english and asked for my credit card number again. I cut him off and said that actually I don't have an account with them and that I was just calling them back so that they would never call me again. I hope they don't call back. I have to much free time to have someone inviting me to harass them....
Oh, best of all...I don't even have an account with Capitol One.- Caller: Probably Not Capitol One
- KJ| 2 repliesIt's not a scam, it's just Capital One calling. They called me twice today and I missed both calls... called them back and the lady I spoke with just wanted to confirm I had received my replacement credit card that I hadn't activated yet. Try not to be so paranoid, people!!

- MartyWould not give details for the call.

- Sam| 1 replyCALLS TO YOU FROM 1-800-955-7070 ARE a "VISHING" FRAUD!
This IS a legitimate Capital One number (which is also on the back of Capital One credit cards) BUT CAPITAL ONE WILL NEVER CALL YOU FROM THIS NUMBER!! The VISHING group calling you is electronically generating this false number that goes to your Caller ID.
NEVER... NEVER GIVE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE -- OR IN AN EMAIL TO ANYONE WHO CONTACTS YOU THAT YOU DON'T KNOW -- EVEN IF THEY ARE PERSISTENT AND THREATENING -- OR TELL YOU YOUR CARD IS BEING CANCELLED OR THEY ARE WITH THE POLICE DEPT. OR THE COURTS !!

Vishing Attacks Increase
Are you one of many who have received an e-mail, text message, or telephone call, purportedly from your credit card/debit card company directing you to contact a telephone number to re-activate your card due to a security issue?
The IC3 has received multiple reports on different variations of this scheme known as "vishing". These attacks against US financial institutions and consumers continue to rise at an alarming rate. For authenticity, some fraudulent e-mails claim the bank would never contact customers to obtain the PII (Personal Information) by any means, including e-mail, mail, and instant messenger.
Due to rapidly evolving criminal methodologies, it is impossible to include every scenario. Therefore, be cognizant and protect your PII. Beware of e-mails, telephone calls, or text messages requesting your PII.
If you have a question concerning your account or credit/debit card, you should contact your bank using a telephone number obtained independently such as; from your statement, a telephone book, or another independent means.
If you have received this, or a similar hoax, please file a complaint at

http://www.ic3.gov/media/2008/080117.aspx - LizaI have been getting calls from this number for a couple months now. I answered one call and the woman on the line said she was calling from capital one and wanted me to tell her my zip code. I asked what the call was about and she said that there was nothing wrong with my account, but needed my zip code. I asked why she needed my zip code and her response was "so we can visit you" creepy! I told her I wouldn't give her my info and couldn't talk. This is definitely a scam. I do have a capital one card and receive my statement in the mail so they have my zip code already. Even though this is the number on the back of the card this is NOT capital one calling. Don't give any personal information over the phone to anyone who calls you!
- Jane ConsumerI started getting these calls, too, looked up this number on this site and went to my Cap One account on line. The number is listed there as well so I called it. I had recently made a bunch of purchases thru Amazon.com and they were verifying that there wasn't some sort of fraud activity going on.

- StackI've been receiving calls from this number on my cellphone for the past week or two, usually while I'm at work and can't answer. They never leave a message, and it just comes up as an 800 number on my phone. Today, they decided to call me (it's a Saturday), so I called back. As others have said, it's an automated dialer from Capital One, and it doesn't specify the nature of the call. They immediately ask for you to type in your 16-digit account number, which I naturally found to be suspicious. So I kept hitting the 0 button until it'd put me through to an operator. The lady asked for my name and account number, which I gave her my name and told her I didn't know my account number off hand. I then cut her off and asked her why they've been calling me, to which she asked what number has been calling me. I read off the number (800-955-7070), and she explained that it's a solicitation phone call. She then offered to remove my contact info for all marketing purposes, to which I said yes. She again asked for my account number and the last 4 digits of my social security number, which I told her I didn't feel comfortable giving her, and told her I want number removed, which they don't need my account info for. She supposedly was able to put me on their "Do Not Call" list, but warned me it could take upwards of 30 days to complete.
The lady was very nice and apologetic, but I still have my reservations that this could've been a scam of some sort.- Caller: Capital One

- InformedOkay, I used to work for a wireless carrier and we came across a problem with people spoofing phone numbers to gain access to other peoples voice mail (this was corrected by forcing the customer to enter a password).
Example: A person could call your companies 800 voice mail number and make it seem as the call was coming from your cell phone. The Voice mail system would automatically let them into your voice mail since it thought it was you.
Example 2: A person could be sitting in China, place a call to you and make it look like its incoming from your Mother. If you were to return the call you would get to your Mom because your redialing her number and not the one to China because you never received the Chinese number.
With that being said, yes, it is easy to spoof or "Copy" a phone number. What could be happening is a scammer could be calling from a spoofed phone number 800-955-7070 to try to receive your personal information. There are those that aren’t concerned because the number appears to be legitimately from Capital One, and give up information. Those that are concerned, are calling the number back and ACTUALLY reaching Capital One, because the number was "copied" Remember, and giving Capital One a hard time. The point is if you are concerned about giving information to someone from an incoming call (For good reason), don’t give any information and tell them you will call them back. You can call that same number back, because it is the customer service number listed on the Capital One website and trust that you are speaking to an actual Capital One Representative.- Caller: Capital One
