We keep getting collection calls for people with our same last name but very different first names.  It's really getting annoying.

Tonight, I received yet another call from this number.  I pressed "1" to get to a person to find out why they were not abiding by the Do Not Call Registry.  The person I spoke to curtly said they do not have to abide by the National Do Not Call Registry - to which I quickly told him that unless he's a charity or a company with which we have a relationship (and he's not) then they absolutely do have to abide by it.

Attorney General's Office Investigating New Phone Scam

Target 7 has learned the New Mexico attorney general's office is investigating a phone scam new to Albuquerque. The Consumer Protection Division received four phone calls just Friday.

The attorney general's office said the call starts with an automated message asking if you want to lower your credit card interest rate.

If you agree, you are then transferred to an operator who asks which of your cards has the highest interest rate.

Once you tell them that, the attorney general's office said the operator then asks for all of the details of the card -- including the credit card number and expiration date.

Lynn Southard from the attorney general's office said, "You do want to keep your personal and private information to yourself, and that does include information on your credit card."

The attorney general's office said the calls usually come from the same phone number.

The office is warning New Mexicans to be on the alert for calls coming from 850-473-1276.

Don't get snared into this trap! Woman said she was calling to offer lower interest rates on my credit cards. She asked if I carried a balance, the name of the bank, and when she asked for the 1-800 number for the bank card, I asked her to mail me information.  She said she couldn't do that and so I asked her for her phone number to call her back.  She said she didn't have one and thank you very much, goodbye and hung up on me.  I called the FTC at 877-382-4357 and reported this.  The FTC was very helpful and said that they are most likely not a legitimate company and that's how they get around by being able to call you when you are on the no call list. They'll also give you a case number.

Here's the message that I got:

Do not be alarmed. Today is the last day to lower the interest rate on your account. Please press 1 to be connected to a representative.

I press it and tell them that I'm on the DNC list and they immediately hang up. I *69'd the call to get this number and also found out that the phone number isn't in service or has been disconnected.

I found this board and called the FTC like someone else wrote and filed a complaint. It was quick and easy. The lovely operator gave me a reference number and said to call back if they call again.

I asked how this bogus company could get my number and they said that the government gives businesses a list of numbers not to call, so that's how they get our numbers.

The reason that the caller ID thing shows a bogus number is because this company has a box that can alter the phone number that appears on your phone or if you *69 the call. I asked if that wasn't illegal and the rep said that it was totally illegal, as was calling the folks on the DNC list.

I get calls from these jerks about once a month.  After a few times it got irritating, so I went up to Wal Mart and bought an air horn (Sports Dept., costs ~$5.00), now when they call I just put the air horn to the phone mouth piece and blow away.  Keep the air horn away from your own ears when you do this, because it will cause ringing.  You can also get these sports/boat air horns at Academy.  Have fun.

My wife and I have received several calls from a recorded message that identifies itself as "Financial Service. This is your last chance to lower your interest rate." Wants current credit card info. When pressed for information about who Financial Services is....the caller hangs up.

This is the fourth call my wife and I have received from the same Financial Services. Smells like a scam trying to get credit card info!!!

I've received about 15 calls in the last month and usually hang up.  I am so irritated with the calls that today I did connect to someone; when he answered I stated "I want my number remov" and at that point he slammed the phone down.  I guess if you're a low-life scammer, it doesn't "pay" to be decent to the folks you're bugging the life out of.
