Twenty entries on this thread and 7 of them are shill-type.  Roughly 35 per cent of th entries telling everyone how "legiit these calls are.  Clear indications of a scam.  Never call back numbers wanting personal information. Especially if they claim to represent a large financial institution.  If you have to call a financial institution, use only official numbers provided.  Usually from official written communications or the number on the back of your CC or debit card. Pretty sure the shills are working for a white collar gang either in the US or Canada.  Been going on for some time.

Someone tried to open an application with my old name and address. I immediately put fraud alerts on all three credit reporting agencies. I still am not sure if it was a fraud or not!

The call was like many of the others listed.  Described himself as from Capital One Fraud department, he asked if I had attempted to open an account.  I told him no, and he said he would cancel the application and mark it as fraudulent.  Then came the hard sell - he asked if this had ever happened to me before.  I replied no.  He then told me he may have some remedies for me and asked if I had a few minutes.  I asked him if he could just mail me the information, and he immediately got confused and wanted to get my address.  Confused - because if he was with Capital One and did have an actual application, he would know my mailing address.  And he did not.

I received a voicemail from the "capital one application fraud department" about an application under my brothers name. They have a fake application number (neither myself nor my brother had applied for a capital one card) and stated they sent an email to the email account listed in the application where there's a link that prompts me to send a photo of a government issued ID and if I had questions to Calle back. I called the actual capital one fraud department and they stated this is not a normal  procedure (to have me snap a pic with my iPhone and send it via a link). After telling the lady on the phone this is not normal procedure and to stop calling me  shesaid this is a new thing capital one is implementing and it was in the beginning stages. It just started in January 2016. Its FRAUD! Do not give them any personal information this phone number is not listed.

I got two calls from that number with two different reference numbers from two different people with similar messages about someone trying to get a cc in my name and to either call back or go to a site they gave me on line for the application.  I called the number and a third person asked for my reference number or social security number.  I said I'd call back. I called capital one fraud department and gave them the two reference numbers. Neither existed.  I was given an email address abuse@capitalone.com and told someone would contact me about the fraud. I would watch my credit report closely.

I received this call immediately after applying online. After listening to message I checked credit and capital one submitted a check on it. I called back and they only asked questions of public record with multiple choice answers with only one being valid. No personal info that can be used to apply for a card, but info that capital one can confirm the applicant is who they claim to be.  Clearly a lot of false applications are being made.

I called Capital One directly as I did apply for a credit card the day before. They confirmed that 855-522-7663 was their department and they had the same application number that was left in the voicemail.

This is not a scam - this is an agent number for Capital One Fraud Department. Thinking this was a phishing scam I called Capital One’s Fraud line that is listed on their website. I gave them the phone number and case number that was left on my voice mail and it was in fact a legitimate call checking to see if I had applied for a card - a fraud case was files and that was the end of it.

I received a call from this number a few days after applying for a credit card. Suspicious as always, I did not return their call to the requested number, but called capital one's fraud services line directly. They were able to determine that the call was legitimate and transferred me to the correct department. I would highly suggest anyone who is suspicious take the same actions I took, no matter how legitimate it seems it's just safer to contact the company directly.

Fake. Got a call from Sierra and then later in the Day Rob. I called them back and personal info was the first thing they asked me after their bogus account number. A call to Capitol Ones ACTUAL Fraud department  (1-800-239-7054) showed that an application in my name had indeed been put in, which isn't surprising as my identity is compromised and my credit under alert protection. Sierra and Rob were obviously trying to phish further info out of me.

Recieved a call from 855-522-7663 that asked for my wife and was told that they were from "Capitol One Fraud Dept.", they gave me a long reference number and I was told to have my wife call back as soon as possible.  I looked up the number of Capitol One Fraud Department which is a 800 number not a 855 number.  I called back the 855 number which answered as Capitol One Fraud Department and told them that I was recording the phone call, all of a sudden they could not speak to me if I was recording the phone call and hung up.  When will the government go after the scammers and lock these jerks up for life.

The 855 number is for the application fraud team at capital one. The number on the website is for the fraud protection department at capital one. One deals with applications and the other deals with opened accounts. When you call the 800 number on the website, ask to be transferred to application fraud team. They're two different departments. The 855 number is legit tho.

Got 2 missed calls and 1 voicemail from "Joshua" from the Fraud Department with a fake account number to call him back. Thought it was strange so I googled the number and saw there were many other people who had received that same message. Don't fall for it! Block this number.

Left a voicemail referenced a recent application to capitol one (I did apply) stating it was the fraud protection department. I thought it may be a scam, so I called capitol one directly. Capital one fraud dept did not seem to know what it was about, but after bouncing to a few departments, it was verified it was indeed capitol one calling me. They wanted to make sure the recent application was actually me. If you get this call and did not apply, someone may be using your information to apply.

This number appears to be getting SPOOFED by scammers to steal info. Call Capitol One directly, never give info to cold callers.
