It is legit - I checked my bureau and there was a fraudulent credit card (Cap One) inquiry from yesterday.

I'm pretty sure this is valid. According to a credit check I saw on my credit report, someone applied for a Capital One card in my name. Whoever answered at this number was able to remove the credit check from my credit report and I only had to give them my first and last names.

Let me get this straight. This number called you, you looked up your credit report, saw someone had applied for a card in your name, so you decided to look up the phone number and tell people "I'm pretty sure this is valid"?!

This is the message left for me: "Hello, my name it Jamie I'm with Capitol One Application Fraud Department calling to verify a recent application..." Obviously a FRAUD. Shame on you Jamie! 1855-522-7663

So I received the voicemail asking me to call back with the application code - I did not. A week later I received a letter on Cap 1 letterhead and in a Cap 1 envelope with this number and the application ID - asking me to call. I was suspicious but called. First thing the young man asked for was my social security number - ummm NO. I gave him the Application ID - he couldn't find it so patched me through to young man number 2 - first question? Social Security number - again NO. Application ID - couldn't find. I hung up. My wife didn't like the "letter" so she called the Cap 1 fraud department # from her own Credit Card. They had to patch through to a special fraud department. These people are serious - they had just issued a Cap 1 Walmart credit card in my name. Application Date was July 2 and card issued on July 6. The Application ID WAS belong to the real Cap 1. They had my SSN, Name, BD, Address. I have never had a Cap 1 credit card. They closed the account immediately. Luckily I have an alert on my SSN with all 3 agencies. If you get a call OR a letter - CALL the real fraud department and report it.

Do you really think someone who posted 4 years ago will return to tell you "what happened"?

Same as many others in here, had a message left of my phone with a case number. I called back and they claimed to be from Capital one's fraud department asking me to fax in a copy of my social security card, driver's license and evidence of my address to this number (844) 456-4558.

I called capital one's support number (1-877-383-4802) and they verified that it was legitimate and that they were waiting on information to verify my identity to complete my application. I had applied a week before so it all checks out on my end.

Anyone who hasn't applied and has this number call them should immediately tell them that they did not apply for a card.

NOT fraud, it is the Cap 1 Fraud Application Dept (they verify identities of new accounts). I called back Capital One with the number on the back of their card and they confirmed the source and validity of this number. No issues verifying from there.

So the person who posted previous to you was lying?  Ok, let's analyse that shall we?  He looked the number because he did not know who was calling or why.  You were the opposite as you looked the number up because you knew who called and why.  Now, which one makes the most sense to you?  Which one has a valid reason?    Lying is against the TOS of this site.

This is a scam. Called Capital One directly and spoke to them about the phone and reference #. It was not them who called and suggested it as scam.

If you get this call, call instead the main capital one phone number that is published.

Same thing just happened to me on my cell phone.  "Unknown" caller ID so I didn't answer it.  Just about 5 minutes later, the same number and "Unknown" caller ID showed up on the home phone.  (Yes, I still have both so quit laughing!)  The message was from Ann at Capitol One with a non-English accent calling from the Application Fraud Team.  I had recently had some contact with Capitol One and was tempted to answer when she identified herself but the "Unknown" caller ID and the exotic voice scared me off.  I'm sure Ann is a wonderful person who loves her children, is well thought of by her neighbors and friends, and receives high ratings on her annual employment evaluations at Capitol One, but I've given her the "Block of Shame" and I suggest you do the same!

Didn't answer, left a voicemail. Woman's voice claiming to be with Capitol One about an application. Voice left me an application #. They also used my name.
Definitely a fraudulent call, that somehow gets people's names. Ignore.

I'm pretty sure its legit.  I did apply for a Capital One Card, and got a call from this number the very next day.  I missed it at work, and I'm like you, I want to Google a number I've never seen. Was this a scam??? I called Capital One back through the direct 1-800 number on their website, and they told me the application dept was trying to get a hold of me for more information for the card application (which was true...new member etc). So its up to you. Call them directly if you're not sure. I'm not worried about it.  They only called me once.

Oh, look! A shill! Come on, why else would you take the time to look up a known phone number? There's no logical reason to do so. Therefore, you must be here to shill.

This is Capital One. I made an application but have fraud alert on my credit report. They called to verify that it was indeed I who made the application. I verified my name and last 4 she put me on hold to process my application and informed me that I have been approved, I immediately got an email from capital One confirming my approval of the card I applied for with my limit.
