Yes, I called the number on Capital One's web site, and the agent told me that this number is indeed their application fraud department, and asked me to call it back. So this is a real call.

This number is a valid number of Capital One's Fraud Dept.  They contact you to make sure it was you that applied for a credit card.  IT IS NOT A SCAM.

Legit - either you applied for a Capital One product and they need to verify it's you - or someone else applied with your info and you SHOULD answer to get them to stop that app

Call Capital One and ask for the application fraud team, not the fraud department. The number is real.

I have a feeling that most fraudulent applications don't have your actual address on it. It's probably the criminal's address, since they want the card to go to them.

When you call the number, ask for the APPLICATION FRAUD DEPT, not the fraud team. Similar names, different departments. Easy to confuse.

Call the number on the back of your card and ask for the application fraud team. They'll confirm it is their number.

Got the message on my answering machine saying they were Capital One and an application was submitted and they need secure proof of id or something like that. I jotted down the application number but did not use it when I called. I looked up Capital One's fraud number myself, called them. Told them the situation. They connected me to their Application Department. I said I did not have the application number handy but I did not mind giving them my SSN to verify (again, I looked up the number myself and called a different number than what the message said to call so I knew I was talking with a real credit card company). The application department referred me back to the fraud department when I confirmed that I did not apply. That department cancelled the application and said they would remove the "hard inquiry" of my credit from the credit bureaus which would happen in 60 days or so. Incidentally, not sure if related, but I got an email from my bank asking to provide feedback on my recent contact with them. I thought the email was fake, but I compared the URLs and sender info with some known legit emails I had from them and I did believe this to be from the bank. (The only difference was some Chinese characters, but they have added multiple language info to their emails) Initially I was going to ignore this, but since I had the Capital One thing, I decided I better be safe on this. I called the bank and asked about the email survey. They informed me that they had a fraud warning from last week. Someone had contacted them claiming to be me asking how to get cash without having the debit card. The bank refused the request because they could not prove identity. Bank suggested I call Experian and start a Fraud Alert. I called them, but the Fraud Alert was an online process. They did confirm the survey email was from them as an automated process.

This is real.... call 1800-227-4825 (capital one's main account number) and keep asking for a representative to get pass the automated crap....once you get someone on, voice your concern and they should transfer you to the application department....(at first, the initial rep might tell you it could be a fake number).... keep voicing your concern asking "is this a real call" and they will tell you it is after getting transferred twice... the people I talked to were very helpful and explained it all.... I moved recently so it was an identity verification

It's a legit number. I got the call, and answered it. A gentleman said he was from Capital One Fraud and said I put in an application for a card recently and wanted to verify info. He asked for my date of birth and last four of my social. Seeing nothing wrong, as I did apply, I gave him the info. He said thanks and they would continue the application. Reading this thread, I got nervous, so I called Capital One directly and after talking to a couple people, I learned that the number IS a legit number of theirs and that they were indeed processing the app. They even verified when the call was made.

855-522-7663 called me, I didn't answer, they left a voicemail on my cell phone.  It was a woman from Capital One credit card fraud department.  She said it was regarding my recent application for a credit card and left me a 14 digit claim number to reference when calling back starting with 135...  I did apply for a capital one credit card yesterday so this seemed like a legit call at first but I am so afraid of all the scams, I think we have to be very careful with our information now a days, I decided to do a google search and get the official 800 number of capital one which is 800-227-4825.  I called them directly, asked to speak to the recent application status department.  I explained to the representative that i received a voicemail from the 855 number above and that I wasn't sure if it was a scam or not and could she verify that capital one was actually calling me or not.  She asked if the vm left a claim number, I said yes and gave her the entire claim number.  She confirmed that it was indeed Capital One calling me.  She verified the claim number was associated with my application from yesterday and said the reason for the call was to verify that I was the person applying for the card.  She transferred me to the fraud dept, I spoke with another rep who took my information, and verified that capital one fraud dept wanted to make sure i was the actual person applying for the card.  Therefore this 855-522-7663 number is legitimate.  I would caution people however to do homework before calling any number back and giving personal information.  I would google the original 800 customer service number of whatever company is calling you and go through that route versus a voicemail number.  Just my advise.  I hope this information helps others.

I applied for a Capital One credit card 2 days ago online of which was "approved" with the card to be mailed in 7-10 business days.  I just received a call from 855-522-7663 with someone stating they were a Capital One representative with their application department and that they needed to verify if I had applied.  They then asked for my SSN, DOB, address, etc.  I refused citing potential fraudulent activity of which the representative understood and advised they would send me a packet via mail to provide additional data back to them in order to proceed with my application.   I then called Capital One directly (phone number obtained from their official website) and they confirmed that it was their fraud department reaching out to me as something on my online application was flagged and they needed paper documentation of identity in order to proceed.  Initially I thought I was being scammed but this process is legit.

I called Capital One back, if you ask for the Applications Dept. they will be able to verify this number and it is legit.  Capital one has so many different departments and phone numbers I guess, that if you ask customer service they'll tell you it's not a Capital one number, that's what they told me, but the applications dept. did verify that is the number for Capital One Applications Fraud

Got a call about "problem with my credit card". I have never applied for it. SCAM.  Even when I read some comments here and someone said "it is legit".  I believe that person is a FRAUD. Be cautious especially aftermath of Equifax breach-- I believe that causes more headaches for victims like us.

I got a call from this number and they asked if I applied for a credit card. I told them I do not use or possess credit cards. The person told me the date the application was filed and where (next town over). All the person asked for was to alert the credit companies about notifying me about credit card applications. They did not ask for any private info and I did not divulge any.
