- AndrewLegit call. Left a message about a credit card application which was true. Left a callback number and application #. Only ask for your name and last 4 social to confirm it's you making the application.
- Caller: Capital One Fraud
- BARThis is DEFINITELY not a legit number. After receiving the call and reference number on an answering machine. I called back and they were asking for identifying info and I said no. I called the Capitol One Fraud line that I got from their own website and they said that no one was trying to open anything with my info. SCAM!!!
- Caller: Fake Capitol One Fraud Dept.
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- Marge replies to AnonymousYou all saying this number is a scammer, are very much so misinformed. They are calling you from the application fraud department. Meaning, someone or yourself have applied for a credit card. And if you didn’t apply, you probably have become a victim of identity theft and you should probably look at your credit and if you see an inquiry from capital one, that wasn’t made by yourself then your next step would be to file a police report. This is a legit number. I was a former victim of identity theft and I get these phone calls EVERYTIME I apply for credit.
- anon| 3 repliesI had a call from this umber, they left me a voicemail, i called them back and was very vague on the phone with them. They claimed to be Capital One application department. I got off the phone quick because i was driving home from work, I finally got time to call their fraud department who did confirm the number was a legit number and not a fraudulent number. The people who are on the other end of the line speak in a soft tone of voice so it can be hard to understand, the first agent told me I needed to send in like 5 different documents and i would need to get a new drivers license with my updated address before I send the copy of it in. When I spoke with the second agent in the department he was very nice and assured me i only needed to send my ID, SS card, and proof of residence, thankfully. They will ask you to fax or mail them this information and have no other way of accepting it. Both the fraud guy and the applications team said they are trying to get their number listed on the website.

- Tygerkat replies to anon| 2 repliesShill alert! You don't have to send a credit card company copies of your driver's license or social security card. And how would they know you moved but haven't updated your license with your new address? I'd say "nice try" but it wasn't, really. It was a rather pathetic shill attempt.
- anon replies to Tygerkat| 1 replyit was strange, but i verified the information through multiple sources from capital one customer service and fraud department and it all checked out. I will keep a close eye on my credit report though.
- Tygerkat replies to anonIf you "verified the information", why did they want copies of your SS card & driver's license? And how did they explain knowing you moved but hadn't updated your driver's license?
- DHCall was legit... the reason they say it's for fraud protection is to ensure that you actually filled out a credit card application and that it wasn't falsely submitted by someone else. The random questions from your public records are a common way for companies to verify that you are who you say... they are as simple as asking "which of the follow addresses have you resided?" It's multiple choice and the last answer is often "none of them." They are not fishing, they are trying to stop fraud...

- TN| 1 replySigned up online for a Cap One Card. A few days later got a phone call from 855-522-7663. He asked if I'd applied for the Card, I said yes. He asked for my last 4 digits of SSN and my DOB and I gave it to him. He said I would get a card in the mail in about 10 days, but I would get another letter from Cap One and to ignore it. When I got home I decided to call the number he had called me from. They answered Cap One Fraud Dept. So I was unconcerned.
I did get the welcome package with a card about 10 days later, and another letter the same day asking for more info. I ignored the other letter. Then I followed the directions on the card for activating the card online, found the account but the account showed a hold on it. Callled Cap One, and they directed me to the fraud Dept. They said yes, it was them and that I now needed to upload personal information to a link they would provide, or I could fax it in. I chose the Upload. Gave them what they asked for, and next morning there is an email from them asking for the same info on Jpeg. Tried sending it 3 times, cuz their link didn't seem to be taking anything. Then suddenly the link broke. I called and the call got disconnected! Waited until later and thought since I'd sent such personal info, I'd better try calling them and I tried the Customer Service number on back of the card. Ended up with a lady in the Fraud Dept who said they'd gotten all my info and all was okay. I sincerely think this is the REAL NUMBER for Cap One. I just think they are VERY protective of information and go about it in ways that may be upsetting to some.- Caller: Capital One

- BigA replies to TNYou called the number on the back of what you thought was a fake card? Instead of looking up the real Capital One contact number? You gave them all your information and even uploaded it to them? What like your driver's license number etc?
- MichaelMay 28, 2018, 1:48 PM - missed [fake] call from 855-522-7663 CAPITALONE to my number on the DNC list.
Today I called 855-522-7663 and spoke with the real Capital One fraud department for about 10 minutes. The woman said her dept. only handles new card applications, and, that 855-522-7663 is not a number they publish or want out. They had not called me. I told her how telemarketers fake the caller ID of major banks, and that is apparently what happened here.- Caller: ?????????

- MollyApplied for a Capital One credit card last week. Received a voicemail on a Saturday (red flag?) requesting a call back and was given a 14 digit number. I checked the Capital One website and could not find this number anywhere (red flag number two). It is Sunday, so I will be calling Capital One tomorrow to check.
- Caller: I'm thinking scam.

- JamesI called Cap One Fraud Dept and confirmed this is their number! Of course, with all the conflicting information online about this number just do yourself a favor and Google "Capital One Fraud Dept" and click on Cap One website and it will give you the current toll free number for you to call. But if you already answered or called them back, it's fine.

- Richard Martinez| 2 repliesThis is not fraud. Its actually Capitol One. Those who say they didn't even apply are probably people who's credit was almost fraudulently used. Thank God Capitol One has this team that does this for people.
- Caller: Capitol One
- Tygerkat replies to Richard MartinezOr - those people were called by scammers spoofing this number.
- MikeHuntleton replies to Richard Martinez
How do you know it will ONLY be Capitol One who calls and not a scammer spoofing this number?Quote:This is not fraud. Its actually Capitol One. - GraceI applied for a Capital One credit card and received a voicemail a few days later from 800-239-7054 saying to call back 855-522-7663. It was the Capital One Fraud Detection department asking me for my birth date and 3 security questions to verify that I am indeed the one applying for the card. If you haven't applied for a Capital One credit card and you receive this call, somebody probably used your information to apply for a card.

- JimThis is capitol one's application fraud department and it's legit. They call you when someone opens a credit card in your name and it triggers an inquery. I called capitol one's published customer service number and eventually got connected to this department and they verified that this is their call back number.

- JoelI was called by this number. They wanted me to verify I applied for a card and wanted me to give them the last 4 digits of my social. I told the guy on the other line with all the fraud going on, parts of calls being recorded and such, I wasn't comfortable giving the information over the phone there had to be alternatives. I ended up telling the guy if they couldn't provide a better way, to keep their card, I didn't want it. I was then read a statement basically saying if I declined the card now I'd have to re-apply. That was fine with me

- DarrinFilled out an application. Couple days later, received a call asking for me to call back. I did not. About a week later, got a letter stating to call them...but they are wanting copies of my DL, SS card, proof of residence...Seems they are asking a bit too much....even though it is probably Capital One, I'll pass.
