- ID Theft from GAThis number is a Scam. I received two phone calls and voicemails from this number 1-855-522-7663 within the last few days (June 2019). I didn't answer, but listened to my VM. Callers claimed to be from Capital One with an incomplete credit card application that needed to be verified and had a reference number. I have had my identity stolen before (2010) and have had sporadic issues every couple of years since. So I immediately checked my online credit monitor. Experian showed a hard request on my account for a Capital One card. This means the scammers somehow already had my social security number. I looked up the current Capital One fraud department phone number online and called them to make a fraud claim. I did not input any data through the automated prompts, and kept asking for a representative until I could speak to a live person. I did have to give the REAL Capital One my name, social, and DOB. They found the application in the system, and created a fraud claim, then closed the application. Out of curiosity I asked what state the application had been started, and they said Idaho, which is not where I live or have traveled. I requested a paper letter be sent to my real address, verifying that I had made a fraud claim and they had closed the account - this is a super standard process and a good way to keep a paper trail if you have trouble in the future. They also recommended putting a "victim statement" on file with each of the three credit bureaus. You can look up directions and samples of how to do it online. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM, and be wise to protect yourself. Now that one scammer has your info, it can easily be sold on black market and this happen multiple times in future.
- Caller: Claimed to be Capital One Credit Card Application Dept.
- Cell phone on do not call list| 1 replyThe previous comments are spot on. We had our identity stolen in the Blue Cross hack & they tried to open up some credit accounts. Have a hard freeze on all our credit accounts. This number has been associated with scams since 2016. Why doesn't the lazy gov't actually do something about this?!
- Caller: Claims to be Capital One, NOPE!

- Cell phone on do not call list replies to Cell phone on do not call listWent back a few reviews and this IS potentially Cap One's specialist fraud line but why risk it? Check DuckDuckGo or google their website. The number i see is 800-227-4825

This number called me Saturday shortly after I filled out for a Capital One CC. I didn’t pick up but listened to the voicemail, I felt right then something was not right. I called Capital One and they had no info of me even filling out an application or knew about that call or reference number the “agent” left. Now I’m seeing that Capital One has been breached. So for all the people wondering about this number ITS A SCAM.- Caller: Supposedly Capital One Fraud Dept

- CSLegitimate number from CO fraud protection department. I applied for a CO credit card recently and when I called to activate my card I was requested to send a pic of my driver’s license to verify my identification. They called me back the next day for more verification, which I provided. This activated my card. A bit of a pain in the ass, but after the revelation of their recent data breach, I’m ok with it.

THIS NUMBER IS LEGITIMATE.
CAPITAL ONE calls you to verify that it was actually you who applied for credit.
I didn't take the call because it wasn't identified, but on the voicemail he identified himself as Capital One and gave an application number, along with this phone number (855-552-7663) as a call back number.
It is possible that identity thieves tried to open an account in your name, but that is what Capital One is trying to determine - whether or not YOU are the legitimate applicant.
They will ask for your full name, address, DOB, and last four numbers of your SSN.*
It's confusing. I have lots of credit but never had this happen before. The reason I know this is a legitimate call is because I got a different phone number from the Capital One website and talked to the fraud department. (When the recording asks for your 16-digit card number, say "Representative" and it will put your through.) The guy gave me his company ID number and then called me back. He then transferred me to someone in the application department where I confirmed my DOB and SSN.

* The online application tells you to expect a response within 7-10 days, but when you speak to them, you may be able to confirm that your application was approved and for how much.- Caller: Capital One

- Better 2 B safeJust call the number on the back of your card or from the website to be safe.
- Nobody’s Fool replies to BrittanyOf course they answered “Capital One.” That’s the fraudster’s callback number! Duh! You’ve been phished.

- seems legitHad a message from this number, called back and gave them the reference number. Told them I did NOT apply for a credit account. He only verified my name and last four of SSN, which didnt seem harmful since all my personal info seems to be out there anyway.
So this number that has been around for over 3 years seems legit to me. To be sure just call the number on your credit card. I don't actually have a Capital One card or account and my credit is all supposed to be 'frozen' so I don't know why this [***] isn't shut down immediately.- Caller: Capital One
- Jeff replies to AngelYes it is, if they call about fraud it is because someone is applying for a card in your name, I contacted them just now and it is their number!
- K QuinEVERYONE PLEASE REMEMBER
SPOOFING IS REAL!
This number is a number for Capital one, but only if you call it!
Anyone can call you and make any number appear on your caller ID. Bad guys and girls know this, so they use a number they find on-line.. so when we google it, we think we are really talking to that company.
Do an internet search on "Spoofing".- Caller: Capital One

- Anonym. The call was legit. It was Capital One's fraud team. Was notified by them (and confirmed from my credit bureau separately) of a fraud alert. Was never asked to confirm anything but the fact that it wasnt me who'd made the attempt to use my info, which it was not.

- HSReceived call saying they were Capital One Application Fraud department, calling on a recorded line, and asking to speak to me by first/last name. They asked if I had recently applied for a Capital One Walmart card. I said I didn't. They told me they would stop this application and have the inquiry taken off my credit report within 60-90 days, then offered to go over further steps to secure my credit, which I declined ( due to the fact that I am aware of these things and was busy at the time of the cold call ). They thanked me for my time an ended the call.
They did not ask for my date of birth or any other personal information.
Then I googled and found this.
I would advise anyone that gets a call from this number to give them no information and avoid saying clear variants of 'yes' - you may as well just hang up and call a verifiable phone number for Capital One stating you got a call about some possible application fraud and you want to be sure what is going on.
In my case, there was a hard inquiry showing on Credit Karma for Capital One NA for today - so it is likely I actually spoke with someone from the fraud department.
But reviewing other posts here, I would consider a call FROM this number to be highly suspect - the number appears to be known to scammers and caller ID can be SPOOFED. If there is ever any doubt why someone is calling you regarding banking/credit/fraud, please feel free to ask who they're calling from and hang up on them. Dial a known good number for that company to have them verify if there is a fraudulent application or other issue with your accounts/credit- Caller: Capital One

- DAMToday I received a voice mail from “Taylor “ who claimed to be from the Capital One fraud department. She left a call back number 855-522-7663 and an “ application “ number 86824298. Instead of calling that number I obtained a number by searching for Capital one. Once I was connected to the fraud department they determined that the phone number was not in their system nor was the application number in a format that they use.

- drgoody| 1 replySCAM SCAM SCAM. Called and left message that a credit application had been filed with Capital One. Gave a "case number." Called them and a woman said if I felt comfortable giving her my date of birth she would shut down any credit applications with Capital One. Did not give her any info. Called the number on a friend's Capital One card and they said no credit application had been made and that this is a scam they are having a lot of trouble with. Said to report it to the police. (Call type below should be SCAM, not "scam suspicion" but SCAM is not an option given.) Also received calls from Fingerhut and Stoney something or other requesting additional information in or to "complete my order" or "ship my order." Am checking with those companies to see if someone really ordered something or opened an account with them - or if those calls are part of the SCAM. Never trust any caller and never trust even legitimate looking sites before you are certain you are not dealing with a scammer.

- MikeHuntleton replies to EstherWouldn't that be a question to ask someone at the IRS and not some anonymous person who posted 3 years ago on a phone number look up site?
I get the feeling taxes are the least of your problems, but thats just a personal observation.
