I have been out of work since January. I get calls all the time from people claiming to be Capital One. This was very informative. Because now I know that while one or even two of the numbers may be the people trying to reach me, the others could be a scam.

I have been getting calls from this number and several other different numbers that are leaving automated messages saying they are from capital one and that they have a special offer for me, which I don't want or care to hear about!!!   they also have been calling at all different times of the day and night at 15-20 minute intervalls and I think its absolutely ridiculuos! They need to stop calling! they have been at it for like 2 weeks! Enough already!

Capital One places annoying calls day and night and they do not leave a message as to why they are calling. In a legal context this act amounts to "harassing phone calls."

I get calls from this number at 8:15am.  No one answers.

This Is A SCAM! they use several diff numbers, if u call it back they ask u to enter ur 16 acct # then SS# DON'T DO IT!OTHER NUMBERS THEY USE ARE

I just recv'd a call from this number, I didn't answer it. How do I report this caller?

I just purchased a new pay-as-you-go phone from AT&T and the first two calls I received were from these people in New Jersey. (732-202-1039 AND 866-381-0453) They sure are quick to jump on new phone numbers! No voice messages were left; however, it may have been due to the fact I hadn't even had the chance to set up my new voice mailbox.

Usually won't talk when I answer.

I have been receiving phone calls from the same number 866-381-0453. When I answer no one speaks. When someone does speak it's capital one trying to collect a debt. The lady that I had spoken to was from some other country, and informed me that this was an attemp to collect a debt. She later asked if I would like to place a check on hold for to make a payment in which i told the lady hell no! She asked when I can make a payment, and I told her when i catch up with the rest of my bills i would call and make a payment, then she had the nerve to ask me how much I would like to put down today, and i told her that seeing as to how she does not understand english, that the conversation was over. I received another call the next day form a gentleman who barely spoke any english, who asked the same questions, and i told the man I did not speak to anyone who dosen't speak english and hung up. Obviously they didn't understand that when i can make a payment i will call. So the next time they call wouldn't that be harrasment! I mean they call more than once every other day! COME ON PEOPLE!

These companies use Automatic Incoming Call capture. If you call in from any number that number is captured and used to call you. It doesn't matter if it is your contact number or not. If you return a call from your office, a friend's or relatives number, or your cell number they have it in the system and will call those numbers. You can fight back in a way. Just like they hide their caller ID information, you can go on the internet and for a fee, have your phone number and caller ID information desguised. Just for grins, send them the information that you are calling from their 866 number and the ID shows Capital One. Then the'll capture that number and call them selves.

Someone called me from this number asking for Christian, who happens to be a relative and when we told him we had the wrong number, he repeated our telephone number which was correct.

This number calls me 4 to 5 times a day, and sometimes they uese another number.  I listened once and it said Hi this is Linda with Capital one and I have deal for you.  Bull.  I want to know how to stop this from calling my cell phone.  Any suggestions?

I got a call this morning from this number.  A man asked for John.  I told him he had the wrong number.  He said okay and hung up.  It was more like they were waiting on an answer then wanting an actual person.

They got your cellular number because you used it in the past to call their 800 / tollfree customer service line. Even if your cell phone blocks caller ID, the courts determined long ago the holder of an 800/toll free line, their right to billing supersedes your right to privacy.

Every phone number you've ever used to call them has been logged and are kept on file if they need to initiate collection efforts. For other purposes like telemarketing or questions about charges the card companies use the phone numbers you've willingly provided until a past due account justifies their vigorous efforts to reach you anywhere they can.

What most consumers are unaware of and find out the hard way:  A collection agent may legally call any third party and contact them ONCE unless the third party grants them permission and leave a message / request for debtor contact.
Example: the collector has a phone number for a 3rd party they believe knows you and how to reach you, they repeatedly call the 3rd party and avoid leaving a message and when the 3rd party answers the phone, the collector asks if you are there, ( THE COLLECTOR ISN'T ALLOWED TO DISCLOSE WHO THEY ARE, COLLECT FOR OR THE MATTER REGARDS A DEBT )
and if they will give the collector a valid phone number. The collectors voice will be stressed, hurried to convey a sense of urgency but they're prohibited by using terms such as "emergency" and even the word "urgent" can be a violation of law. The collector will then ask for permission to leave a message and likely ask for permission to call again. Unless the 3rd party grants permission, the collector has burned up the number.

They can even call your neighbors and ask them to leave a message at your front door, the term varies from place to place but is often "calling the nearby's".

NOW: The trick to stick it back to them, your cell phone rings and it is a 800 number, they've never called you there before,  answer the call, they'll probably tell you who they are and where they're from, THEN ADVISE THEM THIS ISN'T MR. DEBTOR's phone number, I'M JUST HIS (UNCLE/COUSIN/DOCTOR) or other person and tell the collector they can't call here again and hang up.

That is a tremendously effective technique because internal and external collection agencies are versed at operating at or just over the boundaries of acceptable behavior, and most debtors are ashamed to complain about unlawful behavior.

BUT, the FTC and State Attorney General offices will investigate complaints from consumers complaining about 3rd party harassment and a collector can be fined quickly for  contacting 3rd parties w/o good reason and especially if warned never to call back.

I received a call on my cell phone from 1-866-381-0453 at about 1 PM EDT. I answered, but no one responded. I waited for about 30 seconds; no one said a word, and the line did not go dead.

stop it is out of control making all these calls in one day for the

I called the number back, it asks for your 16 digit account number
I used 1 (16 times) then it asks for a soc security I also used 1 for all 9
I got a rep on the phone, they took down my number and (knock on wood) the calls have stopped.
