My.dad owed 0.  Never used credit and owned everything he had yet they made up a bogus amount and couldn't ever say what it was from.  If you talk to more than one person you'll get diff info.  Eventually though if you play the game and waste their time talking aimlessly and never give them a cent.  (Fight fire w fire)  they stop calling.  Its such a sick scam.   It was only a couple weeks after the death and my emotions were high.....I'm pretty sure that person quit after me.  I'm sorry but they don't deserve my respect when they give me theirs.  Sick company and crooks that work for them.  At least send a bill that looks legit.....dont give them a dime but talk to them until they hang up.

Received call via answering machine from 88842022510/x3747 on 7/9/14.  Requested to call this number and speak to Brian Watkins on matter concerning debt owed by my wife ,reference number 1662807.  Called this number morning of 710/14,person answering with thank you for calling Ascension Point.  Transferred to a woman (failed to get name), who began  questions about deceased wife. when asked as to why this information was needed was told that client required it to confirm they had the right person.  Long story short.  I was told they were a collection agency representing  Citi-Bank  and they needed name , birth date address, date of death. at this point I told the person that if they represented Citi-Bank she should have this info , and that I would contact them (Citi-Bank) my self.

Just got a call from them looking to speak to someone regarding my son's mother-in-law's estate.  My son has not had this phone number, nor lived in this house since 2007.  Sounded very "phishy"..

I just received yet another call from Ascension Point (they called 09-02, 09-03, 09-04, 09-05-2014 and that's only what I could find on my phone list) the caller was supposedly, Josh Paulson, he called from 1-888-806-9073. He asked for the person handling my recently deceased family members estate. Once he asked me for my family members date of death I new something sounded suspicious, so I challenged him on this and then I gave him my attorneys name and phone number. I am now in the process of notifying my state Attorney Generals Office, Better Business Bureau, Probate Court, funeral homes in my area, newspaper and since I have associates with the FBI, they also will be notified. This probable isn't the only way that they get info but its a start to at least attempt to stop it.

I am dealing now with Ascension Point for a Citibank card of my deceased mothers. I called Citibank and verified that Ascension was who I now had to deal with...
The lady, Jody that I am dealing with is nice and they are working a settlement with me less than 50%.  I do not want to have to sell her house to pay off this credit card so for me it's working...

My best friend just received a letter from Ascension Point addressed to his deceased wife's estate.  They informed him that the estate must pay for some bill that his wife owed. His wife passed about a year ago in a Nursing Home. She had dementia and hadn't bought anything for at least 3 years.  Her name was taken off the checkbook, credit cards, insurance policies, house ownership, and a long list of other things and she only had a few dollars for incidentals needed in the Home.

He showed me the letter as he often does, and I looked it over.  He was quite upset, thinking he was going to go to court.

    I told him:
    1.  Don't call them, because then they will have your phone number and they will call you 20 times a day.
    2.  They got your name and address from an obit. in the paper.
    3.  Most likely there is no overdue bill.
    4.  Use your caller ID and don't answer any calls from them.
    5.  If someone comes to the door, call the police, and don't let them in.
    6.  Keep the letter and take it to your local Postmaster.  This is Mail Fraud and is a Federal Offense.
    7.  If you answer the phone by mistake, inform the caller that you want them to take your number from their call list. If they call you again, they have broken another law, and you can get money from them.
    8.  Don't worry about it.  It is NOT real.

Call them back and explain either that there is no money in the estate or that there is and you'd like to work out a deal. if there is no money in the estate, kindly ask them to stop calling. Easy enough. If you never call them back they will be required to continue calling.

Or they're letting you know that this is not a scam. When people pass away their estate is liable for their debts. Simple as that. AscensionPoint is calling family members in order to find out if there is money in the estate to pay. They only call family members because the person who got the debt is no longer alive, do they can't talk to them. Ignoring them won't stop the calls because they are required, and have a legal right, to get this information.

They have no right to anything from anyone's estate. Bills owed belong to the original creditor to begin with and not a company cold calling people trying to get their hands on someones estate and taking advantage of grieving family.

Only to the business's that actually own the debts or bills. Not some scammy company cold calling looking to get their hands on stuff they are not entitled to! Nice try, epic fail shill!

More misinformation by a rocket scientist replying to a 2 year old post.  Maybe we should actually try to give the right advice, shall we.  First they are required by Federal law to send a letter within 5 days of first contact stating their name, their physical address, the alleged creditor, and the amount of the alleged debt.  This letter must also advise of the right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the letter (this has to be in writing) as well as the fact that they are a debt collector attempting to collect a debt.  At this point, there are several options.  A letter can be sent disputing the debt and they will have to validate it by contacting the original creditor.  A cease and desist letter can be sent telling them to never call again and they will be required to abide by it.  It the deceased had a will and the matter was probated, then this could be turned over to the probate attorney or the estates executor for handling.   Simply calling them up and telling them to stop calling will generally accomplish nothing.  Especially since this scumbag criminal operation seems to like to attempt debt collection on deceased individuals, something even the IRS does not do.  I'm surprised that these criminals are not simply out digging graves up to steal the gold out of the corpse's teeth.

You are getting better, the post you replied to is only a year old, not 2 like the first one.  Still haven't gained any intelligence though have you.  You also seem to have no knowledge of how the legal system works or anything about wills, probate, etc.  Maybe you should go to your local public library and see if you can find some books to read on the subject and then come back here and give an accurate reply to a current post.

They are supposed to call the EXECUTOR or ADMINISTRATOR, not family members.  They are not entitled to know how much money is in the estate during probate procedures.  The calls are not required by anyone and they have no legal right to the information.  They have a right to the payment of a valid debt, but that is all.  And they must send the executor or administrator a debt validation letter by US mail.  No worthwhile representative of an estate will divulge the net worth of the estate to anyone not a beneficiary;   or pay a bill in the absence of something in writing.   In many cases the representative is busy gathering information about the estate's assets so probate can proceed.

Sad thing is, this Ascension Point is supposedly doing very well.

In fact AP calls the relatives of the deceased and tries to get them to pay a bill even though there is nothing in the estate of the person who had the debt.  They call people at a very difficult time of their lives and put pressure on them to pay.   It maybe legal to call people like this but it is certainly unethical if you ask me.  Survivors of the deceased are not responsible for the debts of the deceased.  Period.
