I'm not a techie so maybe this is a dumb question.  Is it possible to call a legit number and it gets redirected to a scam number?

This number is not a scam.. I was suspect also especially because they called my grandmother's house. I did verify with American Express that the call and the number is a valid AMEX number.

My son and husband received a call from 888-800-5234 asking for me.  I do not have an AMEX card!  When I called the number back, they wanted my SS # - I wouldn't give it to them.  The said they looked up my name and there was not an aoount with my name in the state I live.  I gave them the name of the woman that called my husband and her case number and they said they didn't hava nay record of it.

Just received a call from this number, called the # on the back of my card and they said no fraud flags had occurred.  I thought that was weird, but called the 888 number anyway.  They just wanted to confirm i was aware a new AMEX account had been opened, and i was aware a new card was coming.  Simple and to the point.  This is a LEGIT number.

Just got a call from this # and didn't answer. The voice mail was from a woman named Virginia who left a reference #. I called the # on the back of my card and asked for a representative after reading some of the messages here claiming it was a fraud. The computer transferred me to the fraud dept and Virginia answered the phone. I thought that was pretty ironic, but comforting to know that it was in fact legitimate. She mentioned a suspicious transaction, which I confirmed was in fact something I had purchased and was on my way. It's legit.

Received an email that said a security code had been changed on my AMEX. It listed the last 5 digits of my AMEX number. Rather than call the number that was in the email (888-800-5234) I called the number on the back of the card and after several rounds of questions I was transferred to the fraud department. I didn't ask about the phone number in the email but indeed the email was legit and someone had tried to access my account without authorization. AMEX deactivated my card and issued a new one.

Received very convincing email that had this callback number. Called and computer started with confirm identity information requests. Sounded fishy. Hung up and called number on back of card. AMEX had no record of any email sent to me and asked that I forward the suspicious email to their Spoof department. Based in back and forth above, I would not call number but instead follow on sense and use the number on your card.

You would have to be very naive to respond to this fraudulent scheme. AMEX would never ask you to call a number they supply in an unsolicited email and then supply identity info. Amex's number is listed and easily obtainable. Call them and they will confirm for you this is a phishing scam.

After receiving a call from AMEX Identity Protection of possible fraud I called the AMEX customer service number to see if the Identity Protection number (1-888-800-5234) was valid. They assured me it was and when I called that number they were pleasant and helpful in explaining the reason for their call (new card used more than once during a short period of time-possible lost card). Should have known since my wife was out shopping. :-(

Sure, it's valid.  Just like your post is valid.

When in doubt, call the number on the back of your card.  Do not call any number given to you in an email.  Do not give anyone who cold calls you any of your personal information.  Hang up and call the number on the back your card.  Simple.

I JUST dealt with this and I can say 100% it is valid.  I never answer a number I don't recognize, especially at work, but they actually left a message since I was the account in question.  Once I heard this message, I, of course, google searched, and then did the thing I should have done first and looked at my actual AmEx statement.  Someone had maxed out my card.  In fact, in the message, they tell you, for security purposes, not to call the number on your screen, but rather to call the number on the back of your card and provide you with specific instructions to resolve these matters.  Never once was I asked for my social security number, so I'm not sure what that's about.  In the midst of it all, my roommate, brother, and dad received a call from this same representative.  My roommate informed me before I called her back so I actually questioned the lady on the phone to which she said in these matters they actually research the member when they can't get ahold of them.  This would explain why some people who do not have AMEX cards still may have gotten this call and did not get a message left, because someone they know probably does and was the victim of fraudulent charges.  Believe this if you want, or don't, but speaking first hand as of 5 minutes ago, it's completely legit, and I'm glad they noticed this and brought it to my attention, because it was a card I honestly don't use anymore, so I don't know how much longer it would have gone on before I realized it.  I must also express how much I appreciated how friendly, calm, and polite the representative was as this could have been a much more stressful predicament.

It's a legit AMEX #.  I opened up a new account, received and activated my card, and then they called.  They wanted to confirm it was indeed me and not somebody opening up the account in my name.  A message was left by a man named Russ.  I called the # on the back of my card and when I spoke to a representative, it was Russ as well and he confirmed it was me.

American Express calls from number 888-800-5234 and asks to call back on a person regarding a security issue.   Here is how screwed up Amex is.  This person does not work for our company.  I give Amex the matter number and they CANNOT LOCATE ANYTHING BASED ON MATTER NUMBER.  The ridiculous American Express computer can only see the matter number if someone first authenticates with a credit card.   But in this case I am NOT the cardholder.  I do NOT have the card number.  I only have the matter number which Amex left in its voice mail.

Amex:  how completely screwed up your security business process is!!   Think about this for two seconds, which is one second longer than the analyst who designed your current process thought about it.  If someone is committing fraud and leaving a false phone number, don't you want to know this information?  Won't this affect what Amex does next to know this?  Your process is designed so that Amex never learns this.  When the company you left the voice mail for returns your call and tells you that the person does not work at that number, your operators can do NOTHING with the information.

So, naturally, since the criminals are obviously smarter than you are, what these fraudsters do is put phone numbers that go to voice mail in their applications.  Because the Amex security business process is so braindead, Amex can never verify the phone number as correct or incorrect.   Amex keeps leaving message after message.  We keep responding with answer after answer that you have contacted a number where that person does not work, and Amex has no way to ever learn anything from the transaction.

The absolute stupidity of this situation is intolerable.   Honest people want to help you.  You can't help yourselves.
