i got a call from this nbr saying it was an investigations department....???

Have gotten several calls from this #, looking for a defendant.  I know who they are, a crazy ex of a relative's in-law, but not someone I barely knew, and have no idea where they are.  They answered the phone "Investigations", and immediately knew by my phone # whom the call was regarding.  Said they'd remove my number and not call again.  We'll see.

Got a message from "Ashland Associates" in Florida, Investigator Michelle Williams, looking for the defendant and regarding criminal charges, etc - all illegal to discuss with someone other than the person they are looking for.  I am contacting the FTC.GOV site and reporting them and the phone number.  These people are scam artists who pull up old signed-off debts and try to scare people into giving them payment over the phone.  They tell you they are going to serve you papers at your place of business, etc.   The best thing to do is report them to WWW.FTC.GOV   They are scum of the earth!

For at least the last year, an illegal group of debt collectors have been terrorizing consumers, their family, friends, and employees threatening to arrest the individual of an unpaid loan or other debt (their generally don't even owe). Be aware debt is a civil matter, not a criminal matter, and you can't be arrested. They threaten a warrant if the victim does not pay a sum of money by the credit card over the phone.

Even if you do owe a debt, do not be deceived by the actions of this group.  Many of the accounts they are attempting to collect they do not own.  In other words, if you pay these people, that is not going to clear your debt with its rightful owner.  

Although when pressed the callers give the victim an address in Columbia South Carolina (usually a vacant lot) or Atlanta GA (often a parking lot near the bus station). They are actually out of the Charlotte North Carolina area. The scammers are using the following business names (and there are many others, and they seem to create new ones daily).  They will normally answer the call back number as “Investigaitons”

Thank you for this explanation - it's very helpful. Our son has been getting harassing calls from these jerks, and we're wondering what to do about it.  I wonder if anyone out there has every try to get a cease and desist order issued against them?
