- Anonymous replies to MaryAnneOn 12/18 (Thurs) I received phone call on mobile phone from (716) 206-3218 of which the IRS asked me to call (877) 968-3413. I went to IRS website & called the (800) # they provide on their website. After waiting on hold for over 60 minutes the woman told me I owed nothing (gave me case #). The woman from the IRS was very polite & advised me to call (800) 366-4484 IF I thought this was as scam. On 12/19 (Fri) I received second phone call from (716) 206-3218 on 12/19 (Fri). I called (877) 968-3413 & gave them case # that was left on my mobile & my name (ONLY). I told them I was not comfortable giving them my social security number or address. They ARE the IRS & they were able to verify phone call to my mobile phone was not for me, my other half or my daughter.
- Randy S.Tried it on me today so I gave them Barry Soetero's social number. Now that outta do it!
Firstly it's a scam. A few years ago I had dealing with the I.R.S. and they owed me a little money but the phone calls always said Internal Revenue Service not I.R.S.
If they call me again I'm just going to tell them I'm going to hunt them down and kill them like Liam Neeson in Taken 1-3 lol.
Good Luck!- Caller: I.R.S.

- mirage replies to MaryAnnewe got a call from this number just a short while ago. found these comments here, and did a little more digging. 716 area code is for Buffalo, NY & Niagara Falls area. I then found a zip code for the Buffalo, NY area and entered that plus a 100-mile radius in the office locator for the IRS on its .gov website. It came back with 4 locations, 2 of which did not have the 716 area code. Neither of the 2 that did have that area code had 206 for the exchange. The conclusion is that the call does not originate from a legitimate IRS office within the 716 area code. What is not known is whether the IRS has offices which will not be shown on its own office locator (I highly doubt this) or if this call even originated from the "number" shown on the caller ID or even within that area code. The number may have been spoofed. Ultimately, it seems that this is indeed a scam.
- mirage replies to MaryAnneWe recieved a call from this number this morning about 09:52 (AM) US Eastern time. We as a rule do not answer calls from numbers we do not recognize. I checked here and saw these comments. I decided to dig a bit more and found that the 716 area code is for Buffalo, NY and Niagara Falls, NY areas. I located a US postal zip code for Buffalo. I went to the IRS.gov website and entered that postal zip code and a radius of 100 miles into its office locator tool. The results listed 4 offices. 1 was in Erie, PA with an 814 area code. 1 was in Rochester, NY with a 585 area code. 1 was in Buffalo and the other was in Jamestown, NY. These last 2 both have the 716 area code, but neither has a number in a 206 exchange. I do not know if the IRS has any offices/locations which would not appear in the results from its own Office Locator tool, but I doubt this. I do not truly know what IRS policy is about calling anyone, but from what I have seen, their method of contact seems to be official letters on official IRS letterhead/forms and sent via US Postal Services. While I can not be absolutely 100% certain that this was not the IRS calling, I conclude from my own brief detective work that it was not. It would seem to be some type of SCAM. I also wonder if perhaps the call does not actually originate from this number or even within the 716 area code. It may well be a spoofed number. I suggest that no one answer these calls or return the call if a message is left on/in answering maching/voicemail. FYI, we also occasionally get calls from someone who purports to be calling our number from our number. First, there is only 1 phone plugged into the line. Second, I am not sure about large businesses/organizations with "Trunklines", but whenever I have tried to dial my own number with residential service, I have always gotten a busy signal. Obviously such calls do not originate from the number which is being called. Spoofing is obviously possible and I think is often employed by scammers.

- BennyIRS scam number. Do not answer. The IRS does not contact you over the phone. They will contact you through certified mail or you can call them.
- KevinA recorded message said to call 1-877-968-3413, which is surprising because they usually don't have 800 numbers. Did not say my name or their name, so definitely a scam. Read IRS warning page "The IRS will always send taxpayers a written notification of any tax due via the U.S. mail"

- HENNE, RONPlease stop this freak who is using the call letters of the Internal Revenue Service to frighten and intimidate people!!!
- BobI got my second call today from someone purporting to be from the IRS. This call came in at 2:21 pm on February 6, 2015. The caller did not leave a message, like they did on the first call. My caller ID said, "IRS", but they did not leave a message. According to what I found out on the Internet it is a credit card scam where they try to get you a loan using some kind of card I never heard of. I have been on the Do Not Call list for ten years. Maybe I need to get a Telezapper.
- Call type: Telemarketer
- thedood| 2 repliesAbsolutely for real. It is the IRS call center in NY. The return call number ((877) 968-3413 ) routes you to the "Levies" dept out of Kansas. I just spent close to 40 minutes verifying information "they" had going back to 2008. Honestly, the representative was very kind- giving me all the identifiers I requested- and was of great help in coming to a resolve on an outstanding situation that has been hanging over my head for 5 years. This is the "last chance" you will receive prior to receiving a levy against source of income (mainly). Once again...IT IS the IRS calling but "it ain't your mama's ole IRS". They WILL work with you.
- Caller: IRS
- Slim replies to thedoodThere is a widespread IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.
USA tax payers should read this:

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.
