Looks like this SCAM has been around a while.  Never mind that I don't have a Capital One account and don't ever plan on getting one... I always thought that "800" numbers were for customers to call businesses, not the other way around.  I simply NEVER answer the phone on calls like this, and as I expected, NO MESSAGE was left either.  Sure signs of a SCAMMER in my book.  Ignored.

I think this is a scam. I got a call from this number claiming to be Capital One Fraud Protection Department. He said that someone had recently applied for a Capital One account using my information, and that it was urgent that I call them back immediately. He gave me a case number so I can refer to it when I call back.

I went to www.capitalone.com and looked up their official customer service number. I called their customer service, and then I asked if their was any record of someone applying for an account using my personal information. I was transferred to their fraud/application department. After a thorough check, the agent I spoke to said there was NO record of anyone applying for an account using my information. Even the case number that the caller provided didn't match anything in their records.

I think the caller spoofed my phone into thinking that the call was from Capital One (800-955-7070), and the caller probably wanted me to verify/provide my personal info (SSN, date of birth, address, etc.), so the he could use it for fraudulent activity. The caller's name was supposedly "Jonathan", but he had an accent (Middle-Eastern? African? I couldn't tell; it sounded like a mix between the two), which made me suspicious because there are lots of scammers from other countries.

If you get a call like this then DON'T answer it. If you do answer it, then you're at high risk of them extracting your personal information (they're EXTREMELY SNEAKY at tricking/pressuring you into giving them your info). Just because they say their from Capital One Fraud Protection, it does **NOT** mean that it's true. It's best to let the call go to your voice mail, and then call their *official* Capital One customer service number, which you can find online. If you call the *official* Capital One customer service number (which is SAFE), then you'll need to provide your personal info (as I did) so they can check their system.

Received call ID as CPTL 1FNC CORP December 21, 2018@1:31p & 1:32p. Missed call.

They called using 800 946 0332 also ID as CPTL 1 AUTO FNP December 6, 2018@3:30p Missed call.

800notes: It is Capital One Auto Finance. https://whocallsme.com/Received a message for my husband from Nathan at Capital One Auto Finance - said that it was urgent and important to return the call today. My husband does not have an auto loan with Capital One Auto Finance.  He tried calling back 1-800-946-0332 but it is only an automated system that asks for your loan number or SSN.  He didn't want to release his SSN, so he couldn't get through to an operator.* It was an automated recording when I called back.  Wanting my social security number, and said I applied for an auto loan.  Which I have not.  You cannot speak to an operator/person.* It's 9:47 a.m. The call came in @ 9:46 a.m. When I called back, the recording stated the office was closed.

That post you replied to is 9 years old and was from a Shill.  This whole thread is full of shills and that gives you an idea how big the scam is.

Do not trust calls from this number. Call the bank or finance company yourself on a number you know is good.

You also forgot to mention why you looked up the number when you already know who it belongs to.
Just because this was a valid call for you doesn't mean it is for others. Scammers frequently spoof legitimate numbers to try convincing people their scam is real.

This number called me. It was Capital One informing me to call because they noticed someone seemed to be making fradulent charges on my card out of state. I called and it was true. Someone had just charged $80.00 and $13.25 and $2.69 on my charge. Filed fraud charges so I did not have to pay.

It appears scammers have resurrected this legitimate Capital One number after a roughly 10-year hiatus. Since spoofing a number is now the easiest hack in the world, this isn't surprising.  I've gotten calls two days in a row now;  the first call had such a bad connection it was obviously from offshore;  the second call, today, was slightly better in call quality but the entity on the other end gave themselves away immediately by wanting to discuss an auto loan with C1 that I don't have.
