Got a call from these people who did not want to talk with me but only to my son. They left 8664695977 as a callback number with a referenced I'd number to a so called Apple Barclay Visa card application. My son did not apply for a card and does not even have a job!!!! This is a SCAM!!!!! They did not even mention the company name. We need to shut people like this down. This is just not right!!

They are still at it with the Barclay's-Apple connection.    I have not called back, although I did apply for credit and got a message saying the website wasn't available to process my request at that time.  So am wondering if it got hacked during those few moments, and that's where they are getting our info? Didn't get a letter.  But this stuff creeps me out. Here's the transcript from Sheila's message (with ID# x'd out just in case):

"My name is Sheila and I'm with the security department for Barclays Bank. I'm calling in reference to recently submitted Apple credit card application. If you could please give us a call back. At (866) 469-5977 Please reference application ID number, xxxxxx63. And again, Our number is (866) 469-5977 Thank You and Have a great day. "

I got a similar letter from "Card Services" similar to what's described in the posts above.  The call to 866-469-5977 was connected to the Security Dept.  The application  for Barclay's financing for a MC was made online for an Apple purchase.  The rep advised that I should put a security alert on my file with Trans Union and gave me their 800 number to do so.  I then asked for a copy of the fraudulent app and they gave me an address to write for it,  which I will do.  The episode did sound legit.  I'll update this post when I receive the app.

I received the app in the mail from "barclaycard".  It shows that I applied for a visa card with a $2000 limit.  It gave a Miami address (not mine) but it contained my real date of birth.  There was a phone number indicated.  I did a reverse lookup and found that it was a cell phone number with a Lawrence, Kansas location.  No other information was shown.  The letter from Barclayscard that accompanied the app says that the application was declined as fraud.

Do not believe any of the posts that say this is legitimate... this is a very well organized scam.  I have learned to google any 800 number before calling it back regardless of the source.

My handicapped (brain injured and quadraplegic) brother got a similar voicemail from a Danny (quick talking...etc. as mentioned by others) regarding a fraudelant attempt to get a Gulf Mastercard using my brother's name.

I had to listen to the voicemail several times to understand the Ref # (8 digits) and the 866-469-5977 number to call.

I called on his behalf and talked to a Sheila (no last name) in Maine.

I asked what information they had and she told me someone on July 15, 2012 attempted to open the account and claimed the person had my brother's SSN and DOB.   In retrospect...I wish I would have asked her to tell me what those numbers were...

She seemed very professional and suggested we send a letter to:

    Barclays Customer Security
    P.O. Box 8834
Wilmington, DE  19899   and state the concern on the fraud.

She also suggested that we contact Transunion.

UNFORTUNATELY, while I was conducting that call from my office...my brother "D" (Bless is Heart) realized he could punch the CALL BACK number and called the same people to find out what was going on.

After I sighed that he took the matter in his own hands (after I told him I would take care of it)
...I asked him..  "W" ."who did you talk too"....
    D:  "I don't know...couldn't hear him very well"
W:  "Did you give him any personal information other than the Ref #" ?
D:  "no.......  well, I might have given him the last four of my SSN"
    W:  "D...you don't know these people from Adam's housecat...."   :-(
    D:   "they sounded so professional"
    W:   duh
W:   "did you tell them anything else"
    D: "just my DOB"....

    W:  WTF ???

Of all the people to be picked on...he definitely can not afford this...

    Who should I contact??

    Thanks,

    W

This is Fraud.  Goes to an unidentified Voicemail.  They claimed to by Apple but the number isn't part of Barclays which handles their applications.

I received a letter saying thanking me for applying for a barclaycard financing visa and to call this number to verify information.  I called this number to say that i had recently been a victim of identity fraud and to cancel this information.  after i hung up i searched for the 866 number online and saw that comments about being legit and also being a scam.  I called the customer service number on barclay's website and asked them about the number and the barclay customer service rep conferenced me in with a woman at the 866 number and they explained that this was the number for their credit security.  I dont believe it is a hoax since the barclay rep connected me with this number

They called me first then sent me a letter that states: Thank you for applying for the Barclaycard Financing Visa issued by Barclays Bank Delaware. In order to finish processing your request for credit we must verify information listed on your application. Please call toll free at 1-866-469-5977. We are available 8AM - 5PM Eastern Time. Blah blah blah!
    Sincerely,
    Card Services

I received a voicemail from this number... not very easy to understand... explaining that an online credit request for a Barclaycard (in connection with an Apple Financing credit program) had been opened in my name & SSN but the application had triggered a security alert and could I call back to confirm or supplement the information.

I looked up and called the Barclaycard number directly and spoke to their security team (...after seeing what was written here).  This call I received (866-469-5977) was a legitimate call from a legitimate number.  The application was indeed fraudulent and Barclaycard had flagged it as suspicious.  Barclaycard shut down the application and I notified the credit reporting agencies.

I think the mistake people may be making here is that the credit application activity may be fraudulent, but the people calling out from this number are legitimate.  They are trying to identify fraudulent activities on suspicious applications.

I also received a letter regarding an application for a Barclaycard Financing Visa asking me to call back to verify the application information within 30 days.  I called back after 60 days and said I didn't apply for the card and 'Kevin' said the account was never opened.  'Kevin' gave me a legit phone number to call the TransUnion credit agency and that I should request that a fraud alert be put on my account, which I did.  I did have an inquiry on my credit report for Barclays.  I called Barclays directly, after looking up and finding a different number on the internet, and they said no accounts were opened or applications were on file for my name.
