Seriously, if I receive notice of a fraudulant application for credit in my name I'm calling whatever P# they throw my way.  Even if it happens to be fraudulant, if you are ignorant enough to provide your personal information shame on you.  Speaking from experience in fraud departments with multiple banks, it is standard practice to call out to people regarding applications for credit that are deemed suspicious.  A legit company calling with this concern will NEVER ask for your personal information IF you tell them you didn't apply.  They may ask for your name just to confirm they are informing the right person of a fraudulant application, but that is it.  If they provide an application ID # that is an internal number so that the application can be accessed without prompting you for more information that is sensitive.  For the record, both numbers 888-232-0776 and 866-469-5977 are valid for Barclays, Large banks such as this have many numbers  that go to the same department, just as Bank of America, Chase or whoever.  It's standard practice and helps put calls to a particular group of representatives that are skilled to take such calls.  To to those of you who share the same opinion that Ed has, if you google any 800# with the word scam, you will find some over paranoid blowhard who claims it a scam.  Scammers can't scam if you don't give them you personal information.

This number is totally legitimate.  I received a voicemail today from "Zach from Choice Privileges" to confirm a credit card application in my name, and he left this number to call him back.  I was very suspicious that it was phishing because I had not requested an account from them, so I decided not to call that number back.

Instead, after reading these reviews, I decided to google the bank that offered the Choice Privileges card, and it was Barclays.  I called them directly from the number on their website (302-622-8990).  I spoke to some very nice people in the fraud department, who confirmed that the phone number Zach left me is the number for their application department.  Someone HAD tried to open a fraudulent account under my name and SSN.  Barclays had already declined the application due to inconsistencies with my personal information according to the gov't database they use, fortunately.

I checked my credit reports and found the inquiry from Barclays.  I also found another inquiry from a different bank with the same date, meaning another account was also fraudulently attempted.  I must still resolve that during business hours tomorrow, but I am surprised that the other bank did not also call me as Barclays did.  Thank you Barclays.

Do not hesitate to follow up on calls from this number.  If you don't want to call them back, google the company and call that number directly.  I'm glad I followed up, since I actually was a victim of identity theft.  Thanks to this "suspicious" call, I was able to stop it.  I will now file a police report and put a fraud alert and credit freeze on my SSN with the credit bureaus.

Received a phone call from an unknown number.  The woman on the call wanted to follow up on my application for a BarclayCard and needed some more information.  She asked for mother's maiden name and birth date before a red flag popped up in my mind.  It was when she wanted me to list a previous address that I asked her for a phone number to call her back on because I was unsure if this was legit (only credit applications and credit score inquiries ask for previous addresses).

I immediately called Apple and Barclay.  Both of which said this was a scam.  I did NOT call the 866.469.5977 the unknown caller gave me.

I DID apply for a Barclays card and had to call this number to confirm some details. I am certain this is not a scam because I received a letter in the mail following my application that mentioned my date of application and specific card I applied for (I applied through the Barclays website). You are likely receiving these calls because someone else has tried to steal your (or someone else you know's) identity, and the credit card security found a discrepancy in the information that was provided to them. Either ignore the calls or tell them it wasn't you. They are only trying to get info from you if you did actually apply for the card.

For those not looking to read my Full story, i have included a brief recap at the bottom.

"""""Hi, My name is Cindy, I'm calling from Berkley Carver words master. I'm trying to reach *********** regarding an application, we received in your date. If you could give us a call back. My number is 1(866) 469-5977 and if you can reference application. I. T 41x8x5x0. Thank you. Have a good day. Bye.""""

This is google voice's attempt at translating my voicemail. but regardless, i called them back, referenced that number(partially blocked by "x's" but also semi displayed in case anyone else can see a pattern). the lady didn't seem too thrilled to be speaking with me and while being placed on the "pulling up your application" hold, i googled the number and found many bad results. she then asked me for a previous address, my mother's maiden name and told me that my account was approved for $2,000. and i'll be receiving an email of acceptance soon and the card in 7-10 business days. there really wasn't any customer service with this lady and i am still weary of my phone call(i spoke to a sidney?).

Currently calling barclay, listening to the horrible target breach letter, entering my ss# and zip, digital recording verified a $0 balance with a $2,000 limit.

sadly, when continuing this call, i dialed "4" for more options and "3" for security breach/ or similar information. this is my second time calling, first time was a 10 minute wait and my call dropped. Hopefully this doesn't do the same. I just want to verify that number and be sure they didn't sell my information. pretty sad that you'll have to wait this long if you have issues with your card. (currently on hold for 20 minutes for their security breach line... 24/7 customer service... this is pretty damn embarrassing.

as i'm waiting, i used the "CHECK APPLICATION STATUS" link found at https://www.barclaycardus.com/app/japply/retrieve.do

    and it verifies the following:
    "CHECK APPLICATION STATUS
Congratulations! On 01/04/2014 you were approved for the
Barclaycard Rewards Mastercard with a Credit Line of $2,000.00
You'll receive your card, pin, and cardmember agreement within the next 10 days."

the same date as i called them back/verified this information/am making this post. doesn't seem too phishy now unless this could've been an add on company looking to sell my information/further enroll me?

23 minutes in an i finally get someone on the phone.. she's not too bright. I inform her of the situation, she asks me for my first and last name and asks me what i'd like to do. i repeat to verify my account hasn't been comprised. she asks my name again. and verify's my account info, and must be new(not trying to pick on her, but my service was horrible.) i wasted 5 minutes explainging and then asked for a supervisor.

supervisor, francis. verified that is not there number. told me i have nothing to worry about. i repeated that they have my mother's maiden name, and he then realized the problem at hand. we changed the maiden name to a password which(as per his words) DELETES the maiden name from the system. he also gave me a number for barclay direct should i ever need to call again: 888-232-0780

This has been a horrible experience taking up over an hour of my time today and i certainly hope this an save someone or multiple people the hassle i went through. Happy Credit Building and AVOID THIS DAMNED NUMBER!!!

TLDR; called number back, gave them my information, supervisor verified this is not one of their numbers and whoever it was can now access my account with or without my permission. they state they haven't sold my information, i believe otherwise.

I mean, there's a lot of conflicting information on this topic for some reason.  I applied for a Barclaycard Arrival card a few weeks ago.  They said the application was pending and they would send me a letter explaining the problem.  Today I got a letter.  Very simple, nondescript letter that just said "Call this number:  1-866-469-5977."  I was mildly suspicious, but because I had applied, I called.  I felt kind of stupid for even going that far.

I talked to a woman.  She convinced me to give her a lot of personal information consistent with a credit application.  Now, I'll admit to the red flags, but the pieces were still fitting together.  Today happens (by real coincidence) to be the expiration date of a 90 day fraud block I had on my credit file.  So I expected the initial application to be denied, and I can understand some extra hoops to jump through.

We make it through the list of questions, and while the call still seems kind of...suspicious...I just keep rationalizing the whole thing.  She's asking credit-related questions about an application I did submit.  She has information about me that I didn't give her over the phone (but which would be on an application).  I try to trip her up by asking her questions about myself ("what address do you have for me?"), but she replies with the expected "I can't tell you that."  She puts me on hold a couple of times...she calls me on another line without warning...we get through the whole thing.  In the end, she says I'm approved for the Barclaycard Arrival card and asks if I'm going to spend a lot of money on iTunes.  Again with the weird red flags (this time I assume she's in a call center that handles other accounts).  But I chalk the whole impersonal awkward exchange up to just a rep in the fraud department who is more concerned about fraud than customer service.

Right after the call, I get an email from Barclays confirming that I have been approved.  I visit their application status page, and it says "You were approved on {today's date} for a credit line of {the amount I was told on the phone}."  I've called their automated service, and it tells me I have an account, I have a zero balance, and I have a credit limit of the same amount.

So.  I still feel suspicious, but I'm just trying to figure out what this would be if it were malicious.  Someone would have to know that I applied for this specific card.  They would have to have seen my application with some personal information.  They would have to know that my application status was pending and that I was awaiting a letter.  Then they would have to intercept said letter (I have a locked mailbox) and add their own letter with their own phone number.  Then, I suppose they could be on another line with actual Barclays fraud department, relaying my answers to the real bank.  Bank is satisfied, grants credit.  Scammer is satisfied, has all of my personal info, and is able to open other accounts with it.  But...really?  I mean, there are just too many coincidences.  I'm honestly still on the fence, but I don't even know how to know if it was a scam.  I guess I'll put another fraud alert on my credit report and call Barclays to see if they can confirm with any confidence that they actually spoke with me today.

Decided to look on line and see what I could fine.   Sounds like it is phony.

I don't know about the number, but I got a letter in the mail about an application to BARCLAYS BANK DELAWARE that I did not make. I checked my credit report and found 7 "Regular Inquiries" for applications, including BARCLAYS BANK DELAWARE, that I did not make.

Yep they called me.  They said there was froud with the Barkley credit card number.  They wanted my address and I said no just cancel it.  They gave me ANOTHER number to call  800-680-7289.  I called that and it was totally autimated.  To get to anyone you had to give your SS number so I just hung.  Some people say the (866-469-5977) is the credit card some say it is a fraud company.  Two different stories so it is fraud.  The postive postings are part of the scam.

first and foremost this number is it really a legit phone number. as for the fraud alert on the credit reports perpetrators are now calling the credit reports and putting a fraud alert on the victim's credit report.also when you call the credit card company and they're suspicious they have no way of telling who they are speaking with perpetrators are now using spoofing devices where they can manipulate any phone number they would like to making the credit card companies think you're speaking with them and you're really not. both phone numbers on this forum are really Barclays Bank phone numbers legally Barclays Bank if suspicious at all has to contact the consumer or a true person. and one of the main reasons these perpetrators useBarclays Apple card is because 99% of credit card fraud is for electronics of which the perpetrator can sell easily

This number is legit. I received a letter similar to others who have posted here. The application for this card happened the same day that a bunch of other identity theft things happened to me (Verizon account password change initiation, credit card usage to transfer a bunch of money, etc). I wavered on calling the number, then decided that I would and see what information they requested. They only asked for my name and the application number on the letter they sent, then asked if I had applied for the card. The application had been flagged as being suspicious, and they were trying to verify whether it was really me. Since I hadn't applied, they gave me the number of TransUnion (I'd already filed a fraud alert) and told me they would deny the application, etc. Overall, very professional and again they didn't ask for more than my name and the application number.
