Sarah,   the description that we read on the internet of the 855 number is so vague that it can most certainly be understood both ways.  However,  for those of use who are members of this board,  we have beaten this old donkey many times before.   What some of us eventually did was call AT&T and ask them.   They're response was that  'No one will ever  be billed any tolls or charges for receiving any phone calls unless it was first agreed upon with the carrier (i.e. Collect calls).   Although poorly worded,  the Owner of the 855 number will always be the one who picks up any tabs.   No one on this board or anywhere else has ever reported a charge on their phone bill for answering an 855 number.  Believe me,  if we had there would have been a scream heard around the world and it would have been posted as warnings here,  just as scam callers are posted here.

NO one is an idiot for how they interpreted the internet explanation of how the 855 number is billed.  It is so poorly written that the person responsible should be made to re-write it under adult supervision.  However,  I do promise you that you will never be charged for answering the 855 calls.  I answer atleast 1 or 2 a week and have been for the past year,  and there has never been a charge on my bill.
    Thank you for your post.

Its TD Bank, just activated my new TD Visa Emerald. few hours later they gave me a call. This is usually a survey for the customers. Quite harmless but annoying.
I didnt even notice they called until I checked the call logs in my PBX system. It only allows calls from area codes 519, 613, and 226. Everything else gets put on hold indefinitely and no extensions ring. Just FYI.

This is a phishing fraud -- not TD Bank at all.  The fraudsters are looking for credit card numbers from unsuspecting marks.  The multiple elaborate fake testimonials are from the fraudsters themselves.

Well its easy to spoof a Number, try calling them back. TD Bank outsources to a 3rd party company to do there survey's on there behalf. Just saying :).

This number just called my office, I answered and they asked for my boss, I asked who was calling, he said it was "Brandon on behalf of Regions Bank." I always google any strange numbers calling the office, so I put him on hold and was taken to this page. So I picked back up and told "Brandon" that my boss is unavailable, but he could leave a message. He wouldn't leave a phone number to call back, because he said he has no callback number....cause everyone knows, when your bank is trying to reach you, they don't want you to call them back. -__- Totally legit, right?

you folks need to stop sounding like complete idiots.  The 855 is intended to be used by a consumer to call INTO a company for i.e. tech support, just like other toll-free numbers have been used fro the past 30 years.

So therefore, if YOU call in as a consumer, you do not pay, the CALLED PARTY (in this case the company that got the number is charged, which is the way that toll-free numbers have worked since the days that Moby Dick was just a baby mammal.

Before you open your mouth to speak, stop yourself, please.  It is laughable at best.

Not this time Mr. Fraud Squad replies to Fraud Squad
Hey Fraud Squad........you couldn't be any more INCORRECT Mr. Know-it-all.  I bank with TD Bank, and I walked into my local branch yesterday so transfer some money.  Today, they called me, and WITHOUT asking me ANY personal information, they asked me 4 questions about my experience.  That's all they wanted, and that is all they got.  I am very careful about who gets my information because I have already been nailed by identity theft thanks to TJMaxx.  So, hate to tell you this, but the call is 100 percent totally legit !

I received a call from this number several times today, the woman was polite at first until I asked again "what bank?" and she got a little testy. I did not continue with the survey for several reasons: I was confused why they wanted to confirm that I was at a TD Bank yesterday, they should have known that info if that is why they were calling, @) At first I thought she said "Regions Bank", then when I asked again what bank, she gave me the snotty "TD Bank" answer, and 3) I do not understand why the name of caller comes up anonomous, the phone number may be legit but I want name and number on my phone, no body wants calls from "anonomous.
It may be legit but there are 40 pages of posts here, where many people wrote that they have received 5 or more calls from this number per day, so although they may be working on behalf of TD, they are harassing people by calling more than 1 or 2 times per day.

    How silly!!!

    Regarding Toll-Free numbers (800, 888, 877, 866, 855 and soon to be 844):
Calls to Toll-Free numbers are never charged to the calling party
Calls from Toll-Free numbers are never ... I repeat ... never charged to the called party.

Incoming calls from TF#s actually may be legitimate (at times) when a business uses what is called
Out-Bound Toll-Free service where the CallerID shows the company's Toll-Free number ... this is true of most Credit Card companies, banks, insurance companies, car rental companies, etc. ... where the Caller ID shows a TF# when they make legitimate calls to their customers ... at no charge whatsoever to the customer.

However, there certainly are scads of scammers who spoof a TF# as the CallerID ... but answering these calls does not cost the individual anything ... unless they sign up for a Nigerian Cruise (or whatever).

If you call a 900 area code (or, until recently, an xxx-976-xxxx exchange in many area codes & in NY State xxx-540-xxxx ) you will be charged.

The well known scam that may be confusing people is that of getting a voicemail asking you to call back a number in one of the Caribbean Island area codes (807, 242, 246, etc.). When you call back, you may be charge $5 or more per minute for the call.
