*IF* they have your checkcard number, all they need to use it at a gas pump is ZIP CODE

*IF* they made a transaction online and used a wrong 3-digit CVV code, it may show as pending but the attempt will fail in a couple of days ... so they may ask for your CVV to "verify your identity" or ask for your ZIP CODE to verify your identity and then they can really clean you out ...

this is obviously a complex scheme using very sophisticated techniques but as the banks get better, so do the crooks ...

BOTTOM LINE: never give out ANY info to anyone on the phone unless you are absolutely certain that you are speaking to the bank ... and even then, it is probably best to go to the branch.

Came home to see this number had called 3 times so checked it out. When they again called this morning I answered and  aumated voice  said it was Wells Fargo fraud dept. in regards to my husbands account, press 1. I do not respond nor should anyone to calls but instead called bank directly. It is Wells Fargo and they had put a block on his card, protection for fraudulant charges. He purchased gas and food at Walmart. Note, they did that to mine on an $8.00 purchase, only blocks away from my bank. Call the bank DIRECTLY and question why the call was made.Never respond to incoming calls. Although below asks for caller company name, this does not show on incoming calls.

I need to reply again because of conflicting . It seems Wells Fargo themselves do not know as when I called it was true and others have been told it was not.  EVEN THOUGH, CALL THE BANK DIRECTLY. Some have said they checked their account on line and saw no problem. I would not have seen a problem since charges were made by us and would NOT know a block had been put on account as told by rep when I called. No messages were shown on line. This also was the same when my $8.00 purchase would not go through because they put a block on it. (see above post)
There was no message on my in box online account. I would not have known under either circunstance that there was a problem, a problem that never was except fot the bank. Call the bank and make sure there are no problems with your account.

I'm in the "not a fraud" camp...
They called twice, once in the morning, once in the afternoon.  I just made a Verizon payment, which I imagine may have triggered the call.  They listed my last five transactions.  If it's a fraud, it's the most well done fraud I've ever encountered!

That's not to say someone can't be out there calling from a dummy line that displays this number.  I don't know that such at thing can be done, but I don't know that it can't. :D  But if you get the call & you're comfortable giving ONLY you ZIP, then this shouldn't be an issue.

Well hopefully I don't get screwed, I got a call from them, but they asked for my zip code and not the security code.  I entered two fake zip codes which it picked-up as fake then entered the correct zip code which it accepted.  after this it read off the last five transactions on my account which were correct. So if this is a scam they already have my info :-O

Is there any way they can use just my zip code to get into my account?  I'll call WF fraud prevention and see what they suggest.  Hopefully I didn't just screw myself.

This number is indeed legit... I got the call yesterday and called the main WF number just to verify.  The first lady transferred me to the Fraud Prevention department, and after telling her about the call she put me on hold for like 20 minutes as she called the various WF fraud prevention departments to investigate.  She came back saying the ATM Fraud Prevention department had in fact flagged the account as having possible fraud and their automated service made the call.  She also verified the 800-704-0855 number was not listed in their records as being valid, but it wasn't listed on the phishing list either.

Something else, I forgot to mention to her that the call said they were the ATM Fraud Prevention department, and she came back saying this was the department that made the call... which is a good connection.  So I'm confident this is indeed a legit number.

But if you get a call from this or any other number call the main WF number first... just to be sure.

    Classic Phishing Scam
Received automated calls from this number identifying as 'TOLL FREE' on caller ID for last few days.  Checked my accounts online to verify anything out of the ordinary and finally called 1-800-869-3557 (1-800-TO-WELLS) on the back of your card as others have stated to do.

    FACTS:
    1. Wells Fargo confirmed 1-800-704-0855 is absolutely _NOT_ from them.
    2. Wells Fargo pointed out they do not robo-call, an actual person from the bank tries to reach you.
    3. Wells Fargo pointed out they would put a block on the account/card if fraud suspected, then see #2.

I have asked Wells Fargo to add 1-800-704-0855 to their list of reported fraud numbers.

Summary: BEWARE.  Do not call the number back and do not ever give such a caller any of your information.

They called me literally a couple of minutes ago. I didn't pick up and they left a voice message saying it was from the Wells Fargo Fraud Prevention Department. I just checked my account and everything looks fine. I'm definitely not calling them back.

Jason, of interest, how would you know what number the person at Wells Fargo was transferring you to since it would be an internal call?

This is a scam, I don't even have a Wells Fargo account.

I got a call from this number, didn't get up quick enough to answer.  Didn't recognize it, Googled it (as I do with unknown numbers all the time), found All This.   No apparent probs on my account, but given the timing I suspect I know where they got their info.  Checking further.

[***]. It is NOT a Wells Fargo number. I blocked caller ID and called them to record the call and sent it to Wells Fargo. They ask you for your number to "pull up your records" but it will not work, so they ask again and it does not work (sly huh?) Because then they ask you for your 16 digit card number. AH HA! So...FBI notified. They're going down.

This really IS Wells Fargo! I had someone break into my locked vehicle and steal my wallet and used my card almost an hour away. Since they had tried so many transactions that were declined, it triggered Wells Fargo to call. If you are so convinced that it's a scam, I seriously hope that someone steals your card and spends every last penny of your hard earned money!!!

Really?  You were the fastest swimmer?
It IS Wells Fargo.  In fact, it's their fraud detection department.  I got a call from them, and it was legit.  Found out some people in Australia got my card number and tried to make a few online purchases.

Just because your wife works at Wells Fargo and doesn't recognize the phone number--that doesn't mean it's a scam.
I work for the US government--do you think I have all of the numbers memorized?
Wells Fargo is all over--they have many numbers for various departments, not to mention branches.

If you get a call from this number and are skeptical--just call your local branch or the main office.

You people who assume this number is a scam are morons. This is a legitimate toll free number for the Wells Fargo fraud department. They are very good at monitoring your credit/debit card activity and when there has been an an unusual amount of on-line purchases, they call and verify the transactions are yours. They called me this morning from that number shortly after my card was declined twice. Turns out someone stole my debit card number and made over $400 in fraudulent purchases on the internet yesterday.
