Maybe you can INVENT a debt owed to some well-known bank by Portfolio Recovery and then call them repeatedly to collect on behalf of the bank! Make them demand a voucher! Make one up, just like they do! Fake it 'til you make it, right?

Since I get so many calls from so many different numbers associated with Portfolio Recovery, my guess is that contractors are doing this (that is, someone who is broke, of poor intellect, and unhirable by any other employer). Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the date of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

*Take a picture of your Caller ID
*Keep any and all conversations recorded to your states recording laws, some require they be told, others do not. This can be transferred to a recording device.
*Keep a notebook handy for writing time,date, who you spoke with and what the conversation detailed.
*Check your SOL for your state as well.
*Attorneys need to be licensed as a DC to collect, all DC's must be licensed in their state as well as yours if different.

I'll just bet that jury was filled with people who also were personally nagged by "debt collectors". It would be near-impossible to find someone who hasn't been. I love how the Portfolio Recovery spokesperson was spluttering about how unfair is the $82 million fine. Nope! It is NOT unfair! How dare they scare that poor plaintiff with a false accusation! The debt was not even hers!

I don't especially believe in karma, but you can see how the tables are finally being turned on one of the worst scumbag organizations ever. They are a scourge on humanity. They have a lot to make up for.
