Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the date of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Good Grief thats some important info. They just called me. I refused to verify who I was but they did say they were from Portfolio Recovery, gave me their name and told me it was a business matter. I do not have a business so I hung up and blocked them. I am sure they will call yet again from one of theur many phone numbers they have.

Are you kidding?  PRA company is the under belly for all collections,  good,  bad,  written off, and out of SOL.   Not just Paypal.  They would shake down your grammie for her ssi if they could.    Those subterraneous reptiles are still trying to collect on Pre Civil War gambling debts with 50% already squeezed from ancestors.   Low life shady butt lickers have been sued more times than Phillip Morris.   Other than that....they're okay.

You can bet the farm they will call again and again. They weren't referring to a business as in a company. They were referring to business as in collecting a debt from you or someone you may know.

You're on their list for something.  The calls will continue.  Eventually they will escalate to weekends,  Sundays and evening hours.  They did that to me and I sent them a certified C&D with signature request (leaving only written USPS communications open) and demanded written validation and proof from the original owner of the alleged debt.
Those parasites sent me nothing but one of THEIR own invoices.   Sent it back disputing the original debt as well as their claim.  That was 4 years ago.  Never heard from them nor was a 1099-c filed by them.  They have the morals of an allycat.  No!  I stand corrected.  They DON'T have the morals of an allycat.

Which is why you need to follow through on the complaints, and go to the CFPB web site and look at the letters, send them out certified, return receipt that way you know they got them and they can't say they didn't.

Some Tips:
*Keep all messages
*Take a picture of your Caller ID
*Keep any and all conversations recorded to your states recording laws, some require they be told, others do not. This can be transferred to a recording device.
*Keep a notebook handy for writing time,date, who you spoke with and what the conversation detailed.
*Check your SOL for your state as well.
*Attorneys need to be licensed as a DC to collect, all DC's must be licensed in their state as well as yours if different.

Thanks all for your advise, they did call me back yesterday from a different number I wouldnt verify who I wad told them to send me verification of this (Alleged Debt) I supposedly owe. However I will be following all your advise in sending cease & desist letters, and complaints as well. So sick of them calling and treating people as if we are criminals.  How they manage to be ranked an A- from the BBB shicjs the hell out if me with thier unprofessionalism

Your most welcome Angel! :)  This company is a known bad actor and has many law suits .. it seems they just do not learn even with the 83 million verdict on them.   Yes,  the BBB is a toothless entity bottom line, and they tend to lean to their paying customers, still its a "paper trail" and can be used against them.  This is why its important to follow through with any complaint there.

...in bankruptcy, you can sue them for violating bankruptcy protection laws.  Contact the lawyer who handled your bankruptcy and let them know you're being harassed. Also report them to your state's Attorney General.  Bottom line, their calls - and letters - are illegal.  Debt covered in bankruptcy cannot be "recovered"!
