There are a few groups (one fairly well identified already) of phone scammers calling and pretending to be law enforcement.

If you would be kind enough to provide us with more information on the call from this number (e.g., what exactly they said; who the supposed debt was with; and addressees or web pages given) folks here might be able to assist you.  Thanks in advance!

Place calls, robot stating that it is an investigation to find (insert name here) if you do not know said, please press 2.  Pressed 2 and was connected to some really harsh woman claiming she was in "investigations" refused to give company and reason why they call 14 times a day for this person that hasn't had our phone number in 5 years.  Abruptly hangs up when reiterated to them that they have the wrong number and to stop calling.

Calls back a second time, instead of robot, some guy trying to sound all official claiming that I will be charged with obstruction if I don't give the phone to this girl they are trying to find, again I explain I don't know her, don't know who they are, and if they dont' stop this harassment I will call the police here in town and file a complaint.  Response: Go ahead and do that won't do you any good anyhow deadbeat.....

There's gotta be something that can be done about these places, they are really annoying, and I thought there were laws against this sort of harassment after the first time you tell them they have reached an incorrect number..

These people calls me several times a month, claim they are looking for someone.  I tried just hanging up, but they continue to call me.  So I decided to try to speak with someone to let them know that I don't know the person they are looking for. I spoke with a lady and ask if they would please remove my telephone number from their data base and stop calling me.  I don't know the person they are looking for and if I did, I would not give them any information over the phone.  Do they think I am an idiot or something?

    These people are ridiculous!

Just to give them a taste of their own medicine, I call them over and over and over and man do they get mad.

Then they have the nerve to say I'm harassing them and they'll report me to the police.  I tell them go ahead, because I'd love to speak to them.

Now when I call, just for fun, I can hear what sounds like a police scanner or cb radio of some sorts.  What's that about?

What a joke replies to NolaLady
Probably added the scanners, etc., to try to give more credibility to their police/investigations BS.  If their intended victims hear the sounds of law enforcement, it will intimidate them more into believing these @$$clowns are the real deal.

I got a call at work, they asked for a Manager....I am a Manager.  Woman stated she was a member of local Sherriff's Department, and announced "This is Deputy Waters with XXXX County Sherriff's Department", scanners/cb radio blaring in the background.  I asked for her contact information and Badge Number, she quickly told me she did not have to give that information.  I then asked her to hold.  While she was on hold I called my Sherriff's Department and asked for Deputy Waters, they did not have an officer by that name.  I got back on the line with her and told her I had just called my local Sherriff's Office and she was a liar, her threat was baseless, and she and the telephone number were being turned in to local Law Enforcement, as well as State Attorney Generals Office.  I hung up.

About 20 minutes later the same number called my cell, I answered and a woman (same voice), asked if someone from their office had called impersonating an Officer, I told her "Yes, as a matter of fact it was you, also, this call is being recorded", she then said the "person who made those claims has been released from their office, as they do not practice that", I again stated that SHE was the one who had called, to which I got "You a LIE" screamed a me.  I calmly told her they were more than welcome to call my cell, but I was informing them not to call my place of business, also, if they were coming to make an arrest I will be at  - (gave them my business and home addresses).  She hung up on me.

I called the number back and the same lady answered the phone, I asked to speak to a supervisor, after about a minute wait, another lady answered the phone, I announced the call was being recorded, and then told her what had happened, she asked if I would like to speak to a manager, I said Absolutely, she then hung up on me.

Approximately 5 minutes later, I noticed my cell was on, I picked it up and apparently the line had not gone dead before they picked it up again.  I continued to record while two women spoke about calling and acting as law enforcement, with the scanner/cb traffic in the background, this lasted 3 minutes until the line finally went dead.  I then called back the number and the original lady I spoke with answered, I then started playing the recording, after about 20 seconds of playback, I heard her exclaim "Oh Sh*t", and hang up the phone.

I then proceeded to inform my local law enforcement of the actions and recording.  They will be coming to my place of residence tonight to take a statement and get a copy of the recording.

I got a call yesterday on my home telephone and my mobile telephone. Some so called investigator from a unit with Berman and Maxwell. The call came through on the 888 512 3928 but states to call a 678 496 3412 number back. Something about I was named as a person of interest and if i didn't call them back in 24 hours I would be turned in to my county. Can't find any information on the firm, only a law firm and the name is transposed different. They have called before but it has been about a year ago. Here we go again.

    Scammed man
I called this number after they called family and friends. They didn't tell me who they were or how they got phone numbers. They told me this is attempt to collect a debt. Lady told me my debt is going in front of judge Monday and I owe $875 from cash advance. Never heard of cash advance and she said I couldn't speak to manager, or the attorneys office. Not very professional . Little things caught my attention as to this is a scam

These people are professional criminal scammers and know how to keep away from the law.  They use many different phone numbers and their offices addresses lead to abandoned buildings and vacant lots.  This has been going on for at least a year and apparently the real law enforcement people can't find them!  There used to be more info about them on the internet but it seems to have vanished.  It was listed as a scammer in North Carolina, I think that used at least ten lawyer reference names.  Perhaps they should be treated as a possible front group for a terrorist organization that would allow for Homeland Security to get involved.  You never know....they could be terrorists attempting to gather money.....

For at least the last year, an illegal group of debt collectors have been terrorizing consumers, their family, friends, and employees threatening to arrest the individual of an unpaid loan or other debt (their generally don't even owe). Be aware debt is a civil matter, not a criminal matter, and you can't be arrested. They threaten a warrant if the victim does not pay a sum of money by the credit card over the phone.

Some of the people they are calling do not owe a debt.  Others they are calling have already settled their debt with the organization who owns the accounts. Even if you do owe a debt, do not be deceived by the actions of this group.  Many of the accounts they are attempting to collect they do not own.  In other words, if you pay these people, that is not going to clear your debt with its rightful owner.

Although when pressed the callers give the victim an address in Columbia South Carolina (usually a vacant lot) or Atlanta GA (often a parking lot near the bus station or a Peachtree Road Address). They are actually out of the Charlotte North Carolina area. The scammers are using the following business names (and there are many others, and they seem to create new ones daily).  They will normally answer the call back number as “Investigations”

    Reynolds, Hill, and Associates
    Berkley and Associates
    Kaufmann and Associates
    Sanderson Blaine & Associates
    Blaine and Associates
    McKenzie Reid Associates
    Kennedy, Kline, & Associates
    Nationwide Asset and Recovery
    Piedmont Investigations and Procurement
    Raffino, Garrison, & McCoy
    Greenman, Schwartz & Associates
    McCoy Law Group
    Salem Associates
    Reynolds and Associates
    Ryan, Carter and Fields
    Berman, Maxwell and associates
    DOF Investigations
    Vaughn & Associates

Here is a set of links to a variety of threads on this forum that document this group and its behavior. They include the experiences of victims as well as a former employee or two that quit within a week of finding out exactly what was going on. They also include responses from consumer advocates and people who are really criminal justice professionals advising victims of what to do

Based upon where these calls are originating from the proper local jurisdiction to file police reports would be the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department
    http://charmeck.org/city/charlotte/CMPD/Pages/default.aspx

You can make a report by telephone - If calling outside the Mecklenburg County, the Non-Emergency Crime Reporting: 704-336-7600

You can also make a police report online at
