- Mike-in-MD replies to Doris AndrewsIf they tell you that you are going to be arrested and want an untraceable payment method they are a scam and are in violation of Federal law, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. This is clearly an extortion attempt. Remember, the FTC says to never pay or offer to pay anyone who calls by phone that does not provide written proof sent by US Mail, not email or fax, that you owe the debt and they have a legal right to collect it.
- Badge714 replies to Doris Andrews| 3 repliesHave you received proof of debt by US Mail? By law they are required to send you it, if you ask. Not fax, text, or email - US Mail. It is also illegal in the USA to threaten a debtor with arrest. Prepaid card? You mean a CASH service, that can be picked up anywhere in the world? Nigeria, or India for example (get it?). If your State allows recording of phone calls (1 party consent, 2 party consent - do an online search for your State) tell them you are recording all calls. Then tell them they don't get a dime until you have received something in the mail. Stand your ground as you may be getting calls from foreign 3rd world criminals trying to extort money from you on fake debt. It's nothing new, been in the news a lot.
- Mary B.| 1 replyCalled left threatening messages even called my relatives claiming to have two warrants for my arrest in addition claimed to be with the state attorneys office. All of which was false & against the law. I filed a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and contacted a lawyer

- Warren G.Called and said they have two warrants for my sisters arrest claimed to be with the general attorneys office. Which I know was a lie & against the law. Disclosed personal info about my sister which also is against the law. They didn't realize I was a paralegal and knew a little bit about federal laws & regulations concerning collecting debts, so I called my sister & she filed a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and I have a lawyer at my firm looking into legal action on behave of my sister. People it's important to report these type of calls to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau what they are doing is against the law!!!!

- cynjohn1I rec'd call today by Kaufman & Assoc stating they rec'd my file today & I had 24 hours to contact them & in leaving the message the woman messed up because then she said an attempt had been made to send me correspondence. It was sent to my old address & returned. I've been at my now address for 1 year & my forwarding label ended 09/01/14. How could you receive the file today on your desk, send letter & have it returned to you all in 1 day. This is when I knew this was nothing but a scam. They even gave me a file case number & I did call & can't wait for them to call me back. I also reported the call to the Consumer Financial Bureau.

- JasonCall the police as soon as they contact you. Scam pieces of crap!!!! Don't erase voicemail either. Most importantly don't pay them anything! They will just take your money and run. Call TX Attorney General they will explain it in detail what these people are doing to innocent people. It's disgusting and they need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!!!!
- Jason JThey have contacted me so I know its b.s. but I run with it I offer to deliver the money in person and they never tell me where there at then I say lets go to court well 2 years and still waiting. REMEMBER never pay. These people are to lazy to get a job so they want you to pay them to harass innocent people.
- ShillKill| 2 repliesFor at least the last year, an illegal group of debt collectors have been terrorizing consumers, their family, friends, and employees threatening to arrest the individual of an unpaid loan or other debt (their generally don't even owe). Be aware debt is a civil matter, not a criminal matter, and you can't be arrested. They threaten a warrant if the victim does not pay a sum of money by the credit card over the phone.
Some of the people they are calling do not owe a debt. Others they are calling have already settled their debt with the organization who owns the accounts. Even if you do owe a debt, do not be deceived by the actions of this group. Many of the accounts they are attempting to collect they do not own. In other words, if you pay these people, that is not going to clear your debt with its rightful owner.
Although when pressed the callers give the victim an address in Columbia South Carolina (usually a vacant lot) or Atlanta GA (often a parking lot near the bus station or a Peachtree Road Address). They are actually out of the Charlotte North Carolina area. The scammers are using the following business names (and there are many others, and they seem to create new ones daily). They will normally answer the call back number as “Investigations”. They often call people with a recording claiming they are looking for a "defendant"

Here is a set of links to a variety of threads on this forum that document this group and its behavior. They include the experiences of victims as well as a former employee or two that quit within a week of finding out exactly what was going on. They also include responses from consumer advocates and people who are really criminal justice professionals advising victims of what to do
