- Pixie replies to Dennissounds shady to me. I would have asked why should I fax personal information if you won't give me information.
- Tim| 4 repliesThis is just another number used by Portfolio Recovery Associates, debt collectors that chase very old debts by any means possible (debts that are years past the date they were written off in accordance with the Statute of Limitations law). These people are extremely rude, very disgusting, obsessive, and all around just trashy. I have 96 numbers for them stored in my blocked contacts, and they use any one of these numbers to call, then once they realize you blocked that particular number, they can generate a new number and call you with that. And the cycle continues to repeat... it just never ends. Don't bother going through the tough process of changing your number - they use very shady (quite possibly illegal) tactics to find you. And they will find your number quickly. They've been calling me for over six years, so I've seen over the years the way that they've become worse and worse. In the beginning I chose to add them to my block list, and I've become so used to it that I'm not even bothered by them anymore. Perhaps I should use Morgan & Morgan to find them and shut them down for good.
- Caller: Portfolio Recovery Associates

- Joe replies to TimGet a call blocker app that can block area codes. I got so tired of blocking this [***] individual numbers. So whenever they get a call through with a new number that isn't blocked I don't answer it and then just block the entire NPA (first three digits).
- Jason Almeda| 6 repliesYes they are debt collection. . . . As long adthry aren't threatening to sue you they can call you until you send in a cease and desist letter. Just because something is past the statute of limitations doesn't mean it not collectable. They can still sue you actually. . You have to file an answer with SOL listed as an affirmative defense. SOL means they can't sucessfully win. . .but unfortunately too many people ignore calls and read 800 noted and end up with a judgement by default because they never responded. Also . . .verbal cease and desist is only good for 10 days in most states. Ask for an address send in a written CaD with return reciept and if they continue to call then you have recourse.
Ignoring debt collectors is the worst rout to take. Know your rights and talk to them. . .you might be superseded at the outcome.- Call type: Debt collector
- BigA| 2 replies"Just because something is past the statute of limitations doesn't mean it not collectable. They can still sue you actually." Wrong, once a debt is past SOL they are not legally allowed to sue you. "read 800 noted and end up with a judgement by default because they never responded" If they read the advice on here from members that know what they are talking about they will have no problem. If they read advice from someone like you, well then they will have a big problem. "verbal cease and desist is only good for 10 days in most states" Please show me a law that says this.

They were listed among the worst offenders on the late Bud Hibb's site!
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the date of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

- AB replies to tom ozTom, that's nothing. Calling me, they are chasing debt more than 10 years past legally able to collect, and a lot of it already paid off. They do not care, they are trying to find someone who doesn't know they aren't obligated to pay Portfolio & will pay, even on a debt already paid.
- AB replies to BigA| 1 replyBigA, you forgot my personal favorite: "know your rights... You might be superceded by the outcome."
I seriously doubt THAT, but I would be SURPRISED if Jason Almeda 1) were a native English speaker, and 2) didn't work for Portfolio Debt Recovery, probably out of an office in India - BigA replies to ABI guess I missed that one. I would certainly hate to be "superseded" by my rights. Jason or whatever its name is will soon be out of a job, because there is no way they have insurance that will cover an 82 mil verdict.
- Isa replies to DennisDennis I hope you didn't send them anything. They have the system to get that info. I hope you blocked them. What they are doing is harassment
