We get so many calls from this Portfolio Recovery,   its ridiculous!   they leave no messages on the machine, and how stupid do they think we are when they call all hours of the day and night from different numbers!!   We have logged all the times, dates, and phone numbers they have called us from and we are pursuing legal action!   This harassment should not be allowed!!    I am sick of it!

I do not answer unknown numbers.  Someone called tonight at 6:59 PM and my answering machine picked it up.  The caller ID said Portfolio Recovery.  Portfolio Recovery has also called us from 602-635-389 on 11/04/15 at 8:53 PM and again from 678-265-3904 on 12/03/15 at 4:54 PM and again at 8:10 PM and yet again this afternoon from 205-396-3619 at 5:16 PM.

I looked up this Portfolio Recovery on the web and found it belongs to a debt collector - http://www.portfoliorecovery.com.  The website claims “Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC are here to help you pay your debt.  Call 800.772.1413 to speak with an Account Representative…”  Since I don’t have any current or past-due debts my guess is they are trying to SCAM money out of me.  My phone number is registered on the national Do Not Call List but since this is a debt collection company they are allowed to call you and reporting them has no result …”   Since I don’t have any current or past-due debts my guess is they are trying to SCAM money out of me.  My phone number is registered on the national Do Not Call List but since this is a debt collection company they are allowed to call you and reporting them has no result.

This is a big criminal enterprise that buys old debt or non existent debt and then tries to collect on it.  You are right the DNC does not cover them, but there are agencies that you can report their activities to.  Following is what you need to know:

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the date of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
