Yet another number used y debt collectors,
Portfolio Recovery.

These people just called and as always, portfolio recovery calling from all odd numbers! First time they called this early in the morning.

Ridiculously inaccurate debt collectors. When I offered up proof that I have no debt to be collected, they got snide and almost agitated. I told them that unless they had more to go on than their incorrect accusations, I would be glad to refer them to my attorney as I would be filing a harassment complaint. They laughed and I hung up.
Rude.

Amazing how an organization who has been successfully sued for tens of millions of dollars for  (among other things), going after and laughing at the wrong people can remain viable.

Boggles the imagination...

These ppl (portfolio recovery?? According to posts) call over n over from diff numbers. No voice mail or talk when answer except one time. yet will Not provide proof of anything. Asked to send verification so I can deal. Nothing. Ugh pure harassment. Done!!

No debt validation, no debt. It's that simple.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

Did you send that debt validation letter by certified, return recipt mail?  If not they will simply say they never got it.  If you asked verbally, then that does not have to be honored, as the law specifies it to be in writing.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the date of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Great post BigA. Thanks for all the collected info and links. Lots of ammo to challenge their actions.Yes, Portfolio Recovery can & does put false items on your credit report - they did it to me.

Then you can sue them under the FDCPA and the FCRA.  Go out, get a contingency lawyer  and sit back until the check arrives.  You don't have to lay out a dime until they pay up, and they will pay up.

I am so sick of these idiots calling me. The one time I answered they asked for my sister. I told them this isn't her number. They know that. I paid her debt with them once so now they harass me. They call all hours and from multiple numbers. I told them to stop calling but they won't. I guess they are trying to annoy me into paying her debt again. Funny this is they don't call her. They never leave a message either.

They use many different area codes, i never answer a number i don't know, they can leave a msg and ill call back,but they never leave one

Sick of these same people calling using different numbers.

Portfolio Recovery trying to collect a debt over 20 years old!  Do not answer or they can establish that they spoke to you and update a mark on your credit for the next 10 years!

The only way they can reage the debt is if you make a token payment on it. But---your point is well taken, as the only thing they are interested in is getting you to admit that you "own" it, so they can coerce you into paying it.
