- LilPortfolio collections is trying to collect very old debt they bought for pennies on a dollar. Their records contain very old contact information which is wrong or outdated and they have been sued multiple time for unfair debt procedures. They are being audited by IRS now because of the high number of complaints as they have no original documentation a debt is even valid. Don't answer, but keep a log of date and times they have called. Contact the attorney generals office in your state if they continue to harass you.

I looked up this Portfolio Recovery on the web and found it belongs to a debt collector - http://www.portfoliorecovery.com. The website claims “Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC are here to help you pay your debt. Call 800.772.1413 to speak with an Account Representative…” Since I don’t have any current or past-due debts my guess is they are trying to SCAM money out of me. - Anthony| 1 replyThese people are the SCUM of the earth!! My phone will block 50 numbers and 45 of the blocked numbers belong to Portfolio. We owe on a medical bill that Medicare would not cover the whole amount. It was for $225 and we pay $25 a month because we are on Social Security and Do Not get a lot of money each month. We have never missed a payment and our total owed is down to $75. The hospital listed the bill on our credit report as a "Slow" pay and Portfolio snatched it up and are trying to SCAM us out of more money. We told these bloodsuckers to stop calling and some are polite and others are downright mean. We could go after them and sue, but they never put anything in writing and would claim that their computers made a mistake in calling us. I am about ready to cancel my landline and pray they do not have the number to my cell.

- BigA replies to AnthonyYou have a case and could sue. First, Federal law requires them to put it in writing. Second, instead of talking to them, you need to create a paper trail. Send them letter by certified, return receipt mail. Go to the CFPB site and learn your rights,Also file a complaint with your State. AG. They have been sued many times successfully, and one person received an 82 million dollar judgement. Everything you need to know follows so do yourself a huge favor and read it carefully.
PORTFOLIO RECOVERY ASSOCIATES AKA PRA
Good news, they got slapped hard for 82 million recently: http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article21073359.html

I have to wonder why an allegedly “legitimate “business would need so many phone numbers to call out on?
Web page with contact information: http://www.portfoliorecovery.com/contact_us.html
Make sure you read how they just lost an 83 million dollar lawsuit against them: http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article21073359.html
Make sure you read how the NY AG spanked them bad on May 1, 2014 in the following BBB page.
BBB page with 1,318 complaints, 3 negative reviews a government action from the State of New York, an alert, and yet they get an accredited B+ rating (down from an A at least but they must still be paying big bucks for that rating)? http://www.bbb.org/norfolk/business-reviews/d ... olk-va-51000164
Bizapedia has them as a Delaware Corporation started in 2007 as opposed to the information on the BBBB page that says 1996:

They were listed among the worst offenders on the late Bud Hibb's site!
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the date of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
