- BJWTheir tollfree number appears on the back of their collection letters they send you in the mail. I received a collection letter from them regarding my Old Navy Credit Caard account which has been charged off. When they call you on the phone, the caller ID will display 201-200-9999.

https://800notes.com/forum/ta-29e814622984e67/portfolio-recovery-information - RanThese guys are bottom feeding class of collection agencies. The buy old or statute barred debt and using harassment tactics try to collect 10 to 30 cents on the dollar. Of course once you pay anything the debt clock resets to day 1 and then their ambulance chasing lawyers will sue for the rest. The best you can do is contact your state authorities (don't waste time with the feds, they won't do anything but collect data and publish reports) to go after them.

- Mark Beniach| 7 repliesYou sent me a letter from Portfolio Recovery, saying I owe money to Wal-mart, I probably still do, but why bring it up now, after 10 or more years, plus how can I pay it when I can't work cause of my disability, and can't drive because of my seizures I have, I thought this would of been dropped, I'am not making that much in disability and have to pay my bills.

- Tamianth replies to Mark Beniach| 6 repliesPortfolio is a well known bad actor. You can send them a cease & desist via certified, return receipt USPS mail.I'd also suggest you look into your states SOL as well, it may be time barred from legal proceedings, but then again, they can't touch SSI or Disability.

***A company must be licensed in their state as well as the one they are trying to collect in if two different states are involved.
Some Tips:
*Keep all messages
*Take a picture of your Caller ID
*Keep any and all conversations recorded to your states recording laws, some require they be told, others do not. This can be transferred to a recording device.
*Keep a notebook handy for writing time, date, who you spoke with and what the conversation detailed.
*Check your SOL for your state as well.
*Attorneys need to be licensed as a DC to collect, all DC's must be licensed in their state as well as yours if different.

I have to wonder why an allegedly “legitimate “business would need so many phone numbers to call out on?
Web page with contact information: http://www.portfoliorecovery.com/contact_us.html
Make sure you read how they just lost an 83 million dollar lawsuit against them: http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article21073359.html
Make sure you read how the NY AG spanked them bad on May 1, 2014 in the following BBB page.
BBB page with 1,322 complaints, 3 negative reviews a government action from the State of New York, an alert, and yet they get an accredited B+ rating (down from an A at least but they must still be paying big bucks for that rating)? http://www.bbb.org/norfolk/business-reviews/d ... olk-va-51000164
Bizapedia has them as a Delaware Corporation started in 2007 as opposed to the information on the BBBB page that says 1996:

They were listed among the worst offenders on the late Bud Hibb's site!
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
List of State AG’s offices: http://consumerfraudreporting.org/stateattorneygenerallist.php - Tamianth replies to YonnySo how long have you worked for them Yawny? Oh my, looks like more lawsuits headed your way! ROFL!
- Tamianth replies to Mark BeniachYou are most welcome Mark! As we can see below, a shilly DC apparently trying to run damage control by nay saying remarks! They sure don't like it when folks get educated to the laws! It costs them, but then again, maybe they shouldn't break the TCPA laws.
The only ones who can touch SS or disability is the feds themselves and that's only for student loans, back tax or child support. And at that, there is only just so much even for them.
